The Bishop Guertin High School boys tennis team enjoyed something it hasn’t experienced in several years:

A playoff win.

No. 6 Guertin rolled over No. 11 Manchester Memorial in the Division I preliminary round Tuesday and that now sets up a quarterfinal with No. 3, 12-2 Nashua South on Thursday at South.

Meanwhile, speaking of South, the Panthers got a great pitching performance from lefty Nick Shaw to blank Bedford at Holman Stadium.

For more details on these and other local games on Tuesday, read on:

BOYS TENNIS

DIVISION I PRELIMS

NO. 6 BISHOP GUERTIN 9, NO. 11 MANCHESTER MEMORIAL 0

The Cards are now 12-3 after a fairly easy sweep of the Crusaders, led by No. 1 Dean Liakos (8-3), No. 2 Gavin Bombara (8-6), No. 3 Wyan Wallat (8-1) and the final three on the ladder, in order: Aditya Prasad (8-6), Will Moynihan (8-4) and Ronan Bradshaw (8-2).

The doubles teams of Liakos/Bombara (8-4), Wallat Prasad (8-3) and Sean Finnegan/Moynihan (8-5) also won.

Of course, now the Cards face a bigger challenge on Thursday. South won the regular season matchup 8-1 back on April 14.

“It was early in the season, so we were still getting the cobwebs out,” Guertin coach Tom Lizotte said. “But we’ve had a number of good wins. Now we’ve had the whole season, we’ve been practicing, we’ve been sharper. Hopefully everybody’s kind of come into their game and we can give them a much better run. That’s my hope.”

NO. 5 DOVER 5, NO. 12 NASHUA NORTH 4

The Titans (5-10) did just that against a Dover team that had roughed them up 8-1 during the regular season. North’s season may have ended, but at least they had a better feeling.

“We gained some modicum of redemption,” North coach Rob Trowbridge said.

Standouts for North were Jack Desjardins, Jason Pecoraro and Navein Sribalaran, accounting for al four of North’s points.

Dover (12-3) moves on to face No. 4 Derryfield. The other quarters are No. 8 Keene at No. 1 Hanover and No. 7 Exeter at No. 2 Bedford.

BASEBALL

NASHUA SOUTH 3, BEDFORD 0

Shaw tossed a complete game, striking out one and allowing five hits — three the Bulldogs Armand Roleau — as the Panthers improved to 12-5 with their fifth straight win.

Offensively, Dean Adams had a two-run single in the first, plating Albert De La Rosa (singled) and River Hart (doubled).

Adams drove in the third run with a base hit in the fifth, scoring Hart, who advanced to second on deep De La Rosa flyout and stole third. Hunter Ward played flawless defense at second with six assists

South is at Manchester Central-West on tonight at Gill Stadium. The Bulldogs fell to 10-8.
