HS Roundup: Cards softball tops South; Alvirne blanks Owls

Local high school softball teams enjoyed a summer-like Friday, with Bishop Guertin, Alvirne, and Hollis Brookline all coming out on top.

It was also a good day for the HB baseball team, which got back on track after suffering its first loss, plus the Campbell boys lacrosse team, which won a big game on the road.

There were success stories in other sports as well:

SOFTBALL

BISHOP GUERTIN 9, NASHUA SOUTH 1

The Cardinals (8-6) grabbed an early lead and contained the Panthers (2-10) for the win. BG was led by Michaella Bowen (homerun, RBI), Maddy Bowen (two hits, RBI), Meara McDevitt (RBI), Isabella Nutting (two hits, two runs, two RBIs), Meghan Davey (two hits) and Torey Hart (three stolen bases).

Nutting also pitched seven innings allowing one run and three hits. Emily Richard, Malia Martel, Isabel Mederos, Morgan Gillis and Natalia Rogers each had a hit for South. Jillian Daley pitched three innings allowing two runs, three hits and struck out two and Elizabeth DeRusha pitched three innings. BG hosts Concord and South visits Salem on Monday.

ALVIRNE 6, TIMBERLANE 0

The Broncos (6-6) shutout the Owls at home on Friday afternoon. Alyssa Abbott (single, double), Liz Huggins (two hits) and Faith Cestrone (two hits) led the offense. Maddie Rambeau pitched seven innings allowing six hits.

Alvirne hosts Bedford on Monday.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 16, MANCHESTER WEST 8

The Cavaliers (8-3) great day at the plate leads into a road win against the Pythons. Kailey Disco (three runs, RBI), Emily Tebbetts (single, RBI), Savannah Duquette (single, run), Austyn Kump (two doubles, two singles, four RBIs), Ava Imbrogno (two singles, run), Ally Johnson (single, two runs), Meg Park (three singles, four RBIs), Abigail Guay (double, RBI) and Emily Sartell (two doubles, two RBIs) headlined the day.

Johnson allowed six hits and struck out eight in seven innings. HB plays Pelham again on Monday at Rivier University.

BASEBALL

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 11, PELHAM 1

After losing their first game of the season, the Cavaliers (10-1) regain their traction with a decisive win over the Pythons. Padge MacSeain threw a complete game one hitter giving up one unearned run and striking out 14. Alex Razzaboni had a homerun with four RBIs, Paul Vachon hit a double and Zak Lussier had a triple with two RBIs. HB hosts Pelham on Monday.

TIMBERLANE 5, ALVIRNE 0

The Broncos (4-10) four game win streak ends with a shutout road loss to the Owls. Alvirne was only able to get one hit on the day. Alvirne visits Bedford on Monday.

HANOVER 6, SOUHEGAN 4

The Sabers suffered their second straight loss, losing to fellow Division II contender Hanover, but are still 11-4 going into the final two weeks of the season. Souhegan is at ConVal on Monday.

WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH 8, PITTSFIELD 2

Sean Brennan struck out 15 in a complete game for the Warriors (7-5) third straight win. Troy Brennan had three hits with a home run; while Keegan Hall and Ty Collins had two hits apiece. WLC hosts Portsmouth Christian on Monday.

BOYS LACROSSE

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 14, BOW 7

Ben Dufoe (five goals, two assists) and Jake Roy (four goals, two assists) lead the Cavaliers (4-8) past Bow. JP Torgersen (two goals, assist), Connor Cook (goal), Ethan Bender (goal), Noah Taylor (goal), Timmy Anderson (two assists), Justin Colby (19 face-off wins) and Tucker Luter (12 saves) made contributions in the win.

HB visits Timberlane on Tuesday.

CAMPBELL 8, PLYMOUTH 5

The Cougars traveled up north for a battle of unbeatens and remain unscathed at 11-0, now a clear-cut favorite in Division III. Plymouth fell to 9-1.

Campbell is at Pelham on Monday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

SOUHEGAN 17, KEENE 2

The Sabers (8-3) notch their fifth straight win after a decisive win over Keene. Elle Stevenson (five goals, assist, five draw controls, two groundballs), Mackenzie Cretsinger (four goals, two assists), Emma Kennedy (two goals, two assists, two groundballs), Lyla Kimball (two goals, groundball), McKenzie Berry (goal), Riley Devine (goal), Natalie Heimarck (goal, two assists, three draw controls), Maddie Lim (three assists) and Lyla Hawkes (goal) led the way for the locals. Souhegan visits Manchester Central on Monday.

BOYS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 6, CONCORD 3

The Panthers (9-2) record their ninth straight win when they beat Concord. Santiago Sommorostro (8-0), Atul Phadke (8-1), Kaushik Tadipathi (8-1), Mihir Bhalla (8-1) and Shreenath Mohan (8-1) won in singles. Sommorostro and Tadipathi (8-3) won in doubles. South visits Salem on Monday.

SOUHEGAN 7, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 2

The Sabers (6-5) break their five game losing streak and the Cavaliers (3-9) drought climbs to four in a row. Winners for HB were Bryson Giersch (8-6) and William Critchfield (8-4). HB visits Bow on Tuesday and Souhegan visits Oyster River on Monday.

GIRLS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 8, CONCORD 1

The Panthers (5-7) win their fourth consecutive match after defeating Concord. Winning in singles were Margaret Wagner (8-6), Abigail Finchum (8-2), Krisha Dani (8-4), Jenna Lecklider (8-2) and Samitha Nadella (8-3). Wagner/Finchum (8-5), Dani/Lecklider (8-1) and Nadella/Diya Bhatnagar (8-4) won in doubles. South hosts Salem on Monday.

TRINITY 7, WILTON-LYNDEBOROUGH 2

The Warriors ended their season at 3-9, getting a win at No. 4 singles by Senja Sours, 8-2, and Elisabeth Jacob/Erin MacDonald 8-5.

BOYS TENNIS

SOUHEGAN 7, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 1

Ryan Fernandez (8-3), Matthew Yate (8-4), Connor Firmin (8-0) and Andrew Rosse (8-1) all won singles for Souhegan, which then swept doubles to snap a five match losing streak.

The Sabers are now 6-5 and are at Oyster River on Monday. HB fell to 2-9 and is at Bow on Tuesday.
