HS Notebook: Fame calling again; Campbell has new coach
The Nashua Hall of Fame virtual induction ceremony will be available on line and also on Nashua ETV on Saturday.
NASHUA – Fame is calling the Nashua sports community once again.
The Nashua High School Hall of Fame announced it will be accepting nominations for the Class of 2023 beginning April 1.
The Hall, resurrected by Nashua athletic director Lisa Gingras, who formed an organizational committee three years ago, had its most recent induction last May in a virtual format for safety reasons due to the pandemic after it was delayed a year. It was the first induction since back in 2000, and the Hall was created in 1991, when there was only one high school.
The plan is now for the next induction, the Hall’s 12th, to be held in person in just over a year from now on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at the Courtyard Marriott beginning at noon.
According to its bylaws, The Hall of Fame was created to “recognize and honor those Nashua High School athletes, coaches, teams, administrators, and special contributors who made exceptional contributions in their respective sports or coaching/support roles and who helped to bring honor, recognition, distinction, and excellence to Nashua Athletics by their conduct both on and off the playing surface of competition.
“The individuals or groups honored have continued to demonstrate the values and skills imparted by high school interscholastic athletics.”
The Hall of Fame, which currently has 118 members, will recognize individuals from any one of the Nashua public high schools: Nashua Senior High School, Nashua High School North, and Nashua High School South. Any individuals with ties to the Nashua community is eligible to nominate a candidate they feel is deserving.
In most cases, according to Hall by-laws, the individual must have a minimum five-year separation from Nashua Athletics before being considered for induction. Categories for nomination include:
Student-athlete or manager; Coach or Athletic trainer; Special Contributor; Team.
The deadline for nominations to be considered for the Class of 2023 is October 1, 2022.
According to Hall policy, nominees not chosen for the 12th induction will be reconsidered for the next three cycles. Inductions will not occur more frequently than every two years.
Nominations may be submitted electronically or by paper. Forms are available at the Hall of Fame page on www.NashuaNorthAthletics.com and www.NashuaSouthAthletics.com and in each high school athletic office.
Also, a link to the list of the 118 who have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame are at those sites as well so those making nominations can check to make sure their nominee hasn’t already been inducted.
Inducted into the last class a year ago were Farley Gates, Al Savage, the late Bob DeMello, the late Mark Russell, Kole Ayi, Amy Ruston, Laura Gerraughty, John Schroeder, Kendall Reyes, Brad Zapenas and Trevor Knight.
NEW CAMPBELL COACH
Campbell baseball will have yet another coach this spring, but he should be familiar to the athletes there. It will be James Marron, who in the winter is the Cougars varsity wrestling coach.
It’s been a tough stretch for Campbell baseball in terms of coaching stability ever since the late Jim Gorham retired following the team’s last state title in 2017.
Since then, the program has had four head coaches in four years, including the year there was no season, 2020, due to the pandemic. Last year’s coach, Chris Metz, left after one season to take the reins at Souhegan.
There were off-season workouts and that’s given Marron some optimism.
“We had 28 during workouts,” he said, adding he’s hoping to have two teams (varsity and sub varsity).”
Spring tryouts/practices for all schools and sports begin next week.
Gorham sadly passed away due to a lengthy illness in January.
MR. AND MS. BASKETBALL
The New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization (NHBCO) announced its annual Mr. and Ms. Basketball awards on Wednesday.
The winners: Hopkinton High School senior Brendan Elrick and Pinkerton Academy senior Avah Ingalls.
Erlick averaged just shy of 20 points a game with 16 rebounds a game this season for the Hawks. He was last year’s Division III Player of the Year and is a two-year All-Academic Team member.
Ingalls was the Division I Player of the Year and is solid in the classroom with a 95.6 average.
