HOCKEY PAIRINGS DUE OUT TODAY
The NHIAA hockey regular season last date to play was Sunday – Hollis Brookline-Derryfield beat Laconia 5-1 at Skate 3 – and that means the tourney pairings should be announced today (Monday).
The area will have four boys teams – Bishop Guertin (Divsion I), Merrimack (Division II), and Hollis Brookline-Derryfield and Pembroke-Campbell (Divsion III) – and one girls team, Bishop Guertin.
The Cards (8-7-3) could finish as high as seventh and if that’s the case, they would likely host a preliminary round game (Pinkerton?) on Wednesday at Skate 3.
Merrimack and HBDS will be idle until the quarterfinals on Saturday. Merrimack (9-9) will be on the road, likely – again, nothing is certain until the pairings are released – at No. 7, and that could put them at Oyster River in Durham (likely the Whittemore Center, if it’s available).
Hollis Brookline-Derryfield also won’t play until the quarters in Division III, and that will be next Saturday at Conway Arena at 5 p.m. vs. the seventh seed, quite possibly Kearsarge-Plymouth (8-8-2). The Warriors are the No. 2 seed at 15-3. Pembroke-Campbell appears to have finished fifth at 10-7-1 and likely would be on the road to face Lebanon-Stevens-Mt. Royal next Saturday in their quarterfinal.
As for the girls, Bishop Guertin, coming off its big win over Hanover Saturday night, should be the No. 2 seed at 15-3 and will play Friday in the quarterfinals at Cyclones Arena (time tba), and it could be, possibly, either Bishop Brady-Trinity-West or Pinkerton Academy.
Stay tuned.
GILFORD, MONADNOCK DIVISION III CHAMPS
While last weekend was Division I and II’s big time to determine champions, this weekend was Division III’s turn.
In the boys final on Saturday night at Keene State, top seed Gilford, up by two going into the fourth quarter, pulled away from No. 3 Kearsarge, 46-38.
In the girls final Sunday, also at Keene State, No. 6 Monadnock won the title in decisive fashion, a 50-31 win over No. 1 Conant.
The Divsion IV tournaments are underway but the Wilton-Lyndeborough boys did not qualify and the WLC girls had a second straight year of JV ball as the program tries to get back on track.
