If you like big high school sports events, this is the weekend for you, beginning tonight.
The basketball tournaments continue in boys and girls Division I and II with the quarterfinals tonight and Saturday, depending on the division and gender.
But that’s not all. The NHIAA Swimming and Diving championships are this weekend as well, being held at the Salem Workout Club, the Division II on Saturday and I on Sunday in multiple sessions for both. Because of the multiple sessions, final results and champions may not be known until the day after the event.
Here’s a look at what the weekend has in store:
BASKETBALL
TONIGHT
In the Division I girls tournament, Bishop Guertin (No. 5, 16-3) gets a second home game and will host No. 13 Londonderry (x-x) at 6:30 p.m., thanks to the Lancers upsetting No. 4 Concord. The Cards beat the Lancers 51-30 back on Dec. 17.
“We’ll take it,” Guertin coach Brad Kreick said of the surprise second home game, and he talked about what the team looks for as the tourney continues. “I look for us to play really well defensively, can we string together two, three, four stops in a row on a consistent basis? And we just do the simple stuff well. Can we pass the basketball, not turn the ball over, and keep our hands off people.”
The winner will get the winner of the 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal between No. 1 Pinkerton (17-1) vs. No. 8 Merrimack (11-8) in next Tusday’ssemis in Exeter. Note the earlier time in Derry. The Astros beat Merrimack 73-35 in Derry back on Dec. 15, but the Tomahawks have been much better defensively down the stretch.
In Division II boys basketball, No. 1 Souhegan (17-1) will come off their bye and host No. 8 Laconia (11-8) in Amherst in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. It could be an interesting game as Laconia had a 10 point lead in last week’s regular season meeting in Laconia, ultimately won by the Sabers 66-61.
SATURDAY
There are two local boys Division I teams still playing – No. 2 Nashua North (16-3) and No. 6 Bishop Guertin (14-5).
North will host No. 7 Exeter (13-6), a team it beat 58-41 back on Jan. 14.
Meawhile, Bishop Guertin will have to travel No. 3 Goffstown (16-3) by virtue of its 44-41 loss in Nashua just last Saturday at the hands of the Grizzlies. The Cards led 30-22 at halftime but a poor shooting second half did them in. That wasn’t the problem the other night in the prelims vs. Manchester Central.
The winners of these two quarterfinals will meet in the semifinals on Wednesday at a site yet to be determined.
In Division II girls, the No. 6 Hollis Brookline girls (14-4) will be at No. 3, 17-2 Bow in an afternoon contest at 2 p.m. Elisabeth Stapelfeld has been a consistent 20 points a game scorer for the Cavs, but beating the Falcons will be a daunting task as they have won 15 straight. Included in that was a 52-44 win over HB in Hollis back on Jan. 11.
The winner faces either No. 2 Pembroke or No. 7 Lebanon in the semis next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Sanborn Regional in Kingston.
SWIMMING
TONIGHT
The state diving championships, which contributes to the team scores for the overall Division I and II State Meets, will be tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the Carter Community Building Association in Lebanon.
There are six locals competing in the girls competition, led by defending champion Sue Mai White of Nashua South. She is seeded second behind Salem freshman Ryleigh Mahoney.
In boys competition, there are three competitors, all from Division II Hanover.
SATURDAY
There could be a lot of local noise in the Division II boys and girls meets, with the sessions at 9:15 a.m.and 2:15 p.m.
Hollis Brookline is considered one of the favorites in the girls meet, while the Cavs could score well in the boys meet that may see Souhegan emerge as a contender.
Sophomore Dylan Jewett leads the Cavs while Souhegan is paced by frehman Ed Barnes and soph Joshua Dion.
In Division II girls, the Cavaliers are a solid contender. They finished second to Hanover last year, mainly by virtue of the fact they had no divers and the Marauders got valuable points there.
“We should definitely score,” Cavs coach Bob Ouellette said. “We’re stronger than in years past, we have more depth.”
HB has sophs Cambria Jewett, Gabriella Rizzuto, Isabella Bobocea, Teah-Lou Morel, jr. Eleanor Cunanan, freshman McKenzie Talbot as swimmers who can earn points. The Cavs go in with Jewett as a top seed in the 100 back and two relay teams as No. 1 seeds.
SUNDAY
In Division I boys and girls – same 9:15 and 2:15 session times — Bishop Guertin has always been a big presence. The Cards streak of three straight titles was snapped last year by Bedford, which is the odds-on favorite again this year.
Dover, Exeter, BG and Pinkerton will fight for points. The Cards are paced by junior Eamon Griffin in the 200 IM and 100 breast.
In the girls, Bedford looks to repeat its title, with Merrimack, Nashua South, Exeter, Londonderry and Guertin scrambling for high scores and top five spots.
Merrimack freshman Josey Stevens and sophomore Sarah Conquest are two locals to watch.
GYMNASTICS
Bishop Guertin goes into Saturday’s meet as the No. 1 seed in team competition, followed in order by Pinkerton, Bedford and Salem. They’ll be in the afternoon sessio.
Nashua South is No. 12, Hollis Brookline No. 15 and Nashua North No. 17, and those schools will be part of the afternoon session.
There are individuals, meanwhile, competing for Merrimack, Souhegan and Campbell. The morning session is 9:30 while the afternoon session is 1 p.m.
Because of the size of the facility, spectators will be limited.
WRESTLING RESULTS
There are a lot of wrestling events on Saturday, but that sport’s postseason won’t begin until next weekend.
One of those events this weekend is the Cavalier Classic at Hollis Brookline, and the Cavaliers, a Division II contender, ended their dual meet regular season at 7-1 Thursday with a 75-6 thumping of Goffstown.
Securing pins for the Cavaliers were Hunter Crea (132), Colin McGarry (138), RJ McAdams (145), Troy Moscatelli (152), Ethan Bender (170), Justin Colby (182), and Ethan Strauss (285). Ryan Mercier (160) also earned a decision for HB,
