Tourney Roundup: HB moves on to semis; Milford falls

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Nov 1, 2021

The area was one out of two in Sunday’s high school Division II girls soccer quarterfinals.

Step right up, Hollis Brookline Cavaliers, as you are headed to Exeter’s Bill Ball Stadium to take on No.2 Bow in the Division II semifinals by virtue of your win over Stevens.

Unfortunately, the Milford Spartans can’t say the same thing as they fell at the hands of John Stark. As a result, there will be a new champion crowned in Division II next Sunday.

DIVISION II QUARTERFINALS

NO. 3 HOLLIS BROOKLINE 3,

NO. 6 STEVENS 0

Lily Bouchard got the only goal the Cavs would need just four minutes in, pouncing on a deflection and burying a shot into the corner of the net. Four minutes later Paige Magnuszewski scored, assisted by Madeleine Boudreau for a 2-0 HB lead. Boudreau added another goal for the 12-4-1 Cavs, who have now won nine straight.

Helping to create chances were midfielders Sienna Anderson and Bella Balsama as well as forwards Sophie Warren Sofia Walle and Mackenna Maguire.

Back Amanda Robbins led the defense in front of keeper Maggie Crooks.

The Cavs now take on No. 2 Bow, which beat Merrimack Valley 1-0 in their quarterfinal yesterday. That semi will be Thursday at 4 p.m. in Exeter. Bow, incidentally, is the last team to have beaten the Cavs, a 3-2 game back on Sept. 21.

NO.5 JOHN STARK 3,

NO. 4 MILFORD 1

Sarah Sawyer scored the Spartans’ (10-4-3) lone goal on a free kick.

“Stark played a pretty direct game and we didn’t cope with their physical play well,” Milford coach Russ Matthews said. “With some important players banged up, we just didn’t get it done.”

Stark now awaits the winner of Monday’s quarterfinal between No. 1 Pembroke and No. 9 Pelham in the other semifinal on Thursday.
