FOOTBALL FRIDAY: A capsule look at a quiet Week Eight

It’s a fairly quiet Week Eight in terms of games with any playoff implications for local high school football teams.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t keep forging ahead. For example, Nashua South and Merrimack hope to continue their winning ways, while likely playoff teams Bishop Guertin and Campbell want to get back on track after losses. Meanwhile, Milford is anxious to get back on the field after having its game last week cancelled due to pandemic protocols on the Blue Knights’ end. And there will be no Souhegan-West game this week as West’s pause will not have reached 10 days.

Note: There are some schedules that say it’s Saturday at 2 p.m. but that move was made for safety reasons before West was put on pause. And the Blue Knights would not reschedule to Monday as they have not been allowed to practice all week, so no game, period.

DIVISION I

WINDHAM (1-6) at NASHUA SOUTH (2-5)

WHEN: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Nashua’s Stellos Stadium.

LAST WEEK: Merrimack 48, Windham 27; Nashua South 46, Alvirne 14.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: This is a game between two teams who had hoped to have better records at this point in the season. The Panthers still have plenty of punch led by running back Jason Compoh, while Windham’s offense picked up last week under QB Josh Sweeney but has struggled most of the year. This will be South’s last home game this year.

MERRIMACK (3-4) at KEENE (3-4)

WHEN: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Keene’s Alumni Stadium.

LAST WEEK: Merrimack 48, Windham 27; Londonderry 39, Keene 0

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: This will be a contrast in styles. Tomahawks are coming into their own with the passing combo of QB Kyle Crampton to Shea Goodwin and the running of back Reimello Hyde. Keene will try to keep the ball out of that offense’s hands with a ground attack led by Jarrod Rokes & Co.

ALVIRNE (0-6) at BISHOP GUERTIN (5-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Stellos Stadium.

LAST WEEK: Pinkerton 22, Bishop Guertin 12; Nashua South 46, Alvirne 12.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: The Cards hope to have back Charlie Bellavance (shoulder) back, but with the West Conference title basically clinched, you never know. QB Matt Santosuosso threw more than he had all season in the Pinkerton game. Alvirne will throw a lot, too, looking to find an open Anthony Ferullo. It’s been a tough year for the Broncos, who we’ll say again do not belong in Division I.

DIVISION II

ST. THOMAS (6-1) at HOLLIS BROOKINE (2-5)

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Hollis Brookline HS

LAST WEEK: St. Thomas 28, Plymouth 21; Bow 43, Hollis Brookline 16.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: When the Saints come marching into Hollis, they’ll do so with a six game winning streak, elevating themselves to one of Division II’s best teams. QB Michael Skowron and backs Spencer Lassard and Tyler Leedberg will look to put up points against a struggle Cavs defense that has given up an average of seven in their two wins but an average of 52.4 in their five losses.

MILFORD (5-1) at HILLSBORO-DEERING-HOPKINTON

WHEN: Saturday, 1 p.m.

WHERE: HD High School.

LAST WEEK: Milford did not play; HDH beat Kingswood, 41-8.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: The Spartans, paced by backs Caden Zalenski and Logan Barnhill, will try to shake the rust off after not playing last week and try push forward for a playoff spot. HDH took advantage of a winless Kingswood team but do have a strong running game behind back Jack Morrall.

DIVISION III

CAMPBELL (5-2) at STEVENS (3-4)

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Stevens HS in Claremont

LAST WEEK: Pelham 41, Campbell 0; Trinity 48, Stevens 0.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: Something’s got to give as both teams will try to recover from horrible losses to likely the top two teams in Division III. It’s certainly doubtful that the Jackson Kanaley-Nate Perry led Cougar offense will be shut out in this one. QB Zack Bundy and receiver Kaden Thyne have been a combo that’s worked for the Cardinals in the past.
