HS Roundup: Panthers edge Broncos, big lax wins for HB

The Nashua High School South and Alvirne boys tennis teams should play a seven-match series, they’re that even.

After the Broncos beat the Panthers 5-4 on Monday, South returned the favor by the same tally Tuesday.

That was just one of several events on the docket, that included big lacrosse wins for the South girls, and Hollis Brookline boy-girl lax sweep of Pelham, Nashua South’s first softball win of the spring, a big strikeout day for Souhegan baseball pitchers, and more.

Here’s the rundown:

BOYS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 5,

ALVIRNE 4

After losing to the Meuse brothers in the first two singles matches, the Panthers took the next four singles and managed a win at No. 2 doubles to pull out the win.

Winners for South included Akhil Kammita (8-6), Neil Kachappily (8-5), Shubh Dubey (8-6) and Praneet Nadella (8-1) in singles three through six.

But they needed Kammita and Kachappily to team up at No. 2 doubles and win 8-5 for that fifth point.

Peyton Meuse (8-2) and Ashton Meuse (8-0) were Alvirne’s only singles winners, but the Broncos got a win by the Meuses at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, and Jon Rudy/Broady Burke at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.

GIRLS TENNIS

NASHUA SOUTH 7,

ALVIRNE 2

The Panthers got their second win over the Broncos in as many days. Winners for South included Margaret Wagner (8-1), Priva Shokeen (8-0), Abby Finchum (8-3), Katrina Tsao (9-7), and Jenna Lecklider (8-3) in singles, and the doubles teams of Wagner-Shokeen (8-1) and Finchum-Tsao (8-1).

Alvirne got a singles win by Marissa Murphy at No. 5, 8-5, and Murphy and Ruby Dionne teamed up to win No. 3 doubles, 8-3.

SOUHEGAN 6,

MILFORD 3

The Sabers, after losing the first two singles, won the next four and the first two doubles.

Souhegan winners were Mishka Tower (8-0), Carolyn Horner (8-2), Molly Atkinson (8-1), and Keelin Hewelyn (8-0). Maddie Daniel/Anna Goyette (8-0) and Tower/Horner (8-2) won in doubles.

Milford got wins by Grace Carpenter (8-2) at No. 1 singles and Adrianna George (8-2) at No. 2. Juliann DeGraffenried and Dzenana Harambasic triumphed at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.

BOYS LACROSSE

LONDONDERRY 14,

MERRIMACK 4

The Tomahawks got two goals from Matthew Todd but it wasn’t nearly enough. Declan Covell added a goal and two assists, while Shea Goodwin scored a goal and Kyle Dunn added an assist.

Alex Griffin was busy in goal for the Tomahawks with 14 saves. The two teams play again in Merrimack on Thursday at 6 p.m.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 18,

PELHAM 2

It was a goalfest for the Cavs, as Hunter Hudzik had six goals and Joe O’Riley five goals and three assists.

Ben Dufoe had a hat trick with an assist while Jake Roy added two goals, four assists. Other scorers were Ethan Bender (goal, three assists), Tommy Anderson (goal, two assists), Andrew Torgerson and Garrett Sturges (assist each).

Scott Walsh had seven saves in goal for the Cavs.

EXETER 16,

SOUHEGAN 2

The 3-0 Blue Hawks, thought of as a Division I contender, dropped the Sabers to 1-2 in Amherst. Souhegan got goals from Alex Karpawich and Tony Garrant.

GIRLS LACROSSE

NASHUA SOUTH 17,

KEENE 1

The Panthers are off to a great 3-0 start, and yesterday they were led in scoring by Olivia Johnson (four goals, two assists), while Kaitlyn West and Bella Walsh each had two goals and two assists and Maya Rioux and Bailey Carroll each had a goal for South.

But the little things, combined with scoring, were just as important. Soleil Dubois (five draw controls, three goals, one assist), Ella Benzekri (three draw controls, four goals) and Kylie Dawe (four draw controls, one goal) controlled the draw circle.

Aryanna Murray played great defense accumulating three ground balls and two interceptions to help out goalie Audrey Mullaney,who had five saves.

The two teams meet again in Keene on Thursday.

SOUHEGAN 19,

EXETER 10

The Sabers evened their record at 2-2, led by five goals and two assists by Abby Hawkes, plus four goals, three assists and two draw controls from Cali Bishop and four goals, four draw controls, four ground ball pickups by Elle Stevenson.

It was a busy scoring day for the Sabers, as others who got into the act were Margot Mans (two goals), Delaney Facques (two goals), Lyla Kimball (goal, assist, six draw controls), Nicole O’Rourke (goal, two draws, three ground balls) and McKenzie Cretsinger (three assists).

Shannon Hargreaves had eight big saves in goal for the Sabers.

HOLLIS BROOKLINE 16,

PELHAM 4

The Cavaliers moved to 3-0 as Alyssa Hill had a five-point day with two goals and three assists.

Abbey Magnuszewski scored a team-high three goals and added an assist while Nicole Heiter contributed with two goals and an assist.

Morgan Broadhurst (two assist), Cailean Roy (goal, assists, Abbie Ogren (two goals), Brooke Allanach (goal, assist), Kaitlyn Castriota (goal, assist), Hallie Bardani (goal, assist, and Bella Haytayan (two goals) each pitched in with two points on the day.

Also, Ellie Maxwell scored a goal and had a strong day taking the draw. Paige Maguszewski had a coast-to-coast assist and played solid defense. Sammy Atlas, Mack Jusczak, and Daniella Allanach also played well defensively, forcing numerous turnovrs and making life easy for goalies Libby Rutledge and Hallie Bardani.

BASEBALL

MILFORD 10,

CAMPBELL 2

Eight players got in Milford’s 10-hit attack, led by Ben O’Connell and ake Lammi with two hits apiece while Damian Philbrick, O’Connell and James Rolanti each had two RBIs.

Brandon Shaw got the win on the mound for Milford, giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out eight over four innings. Trice Cote pitched the last three innings giving up one hit and striking out three.

The two teams play again on Friday in Litchfield.

SOUHEGAN 7,

MANCHESTER WEST 3

Saber pitchers comebined for 18 strikeouts, led by Kyan Bagshaw’s eight over three innings of two-hit, shutout ball. Dylan Dufour and Wil Jaques also joined the K parade.

Offensively, Duvour had a three-run triple in the first, Keegan Burke had two hits and Dylan Button not only scored twice but executed a suicide squeeze bunt for an RBI.

Souhegan is at West at Gill Stadium Friday at 4 p.m.

LONDONDERRY 10,

MERRIMACK 0

(six innings)

The Tomahawks were held to just two hits to fall to 1-3. They’ll be back in action next Monday vs. Pinkerton.

SOFTBALL

NASHUA SOUTH 8,

MANCHESTER MEMORIAL 1

Natalie Ward was in the pitcher’s circle for Nashua South. The righthander lasted seven innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out 15.

Nashua South totaled 14 hits. Lexi Roberge, Natalie Ward (three each), Lizzie DeRusha, Audra Robinson, Natalia Rogers, and Morgan Gillis all collected multiple hits for Nashua South. DeRusha made the most defensive plays with 15.

MERRIMACK 4,

LONDONDRRY 2

The Tomahawks avenged Monday’s loss thanks to Avery Hui’s four-hitter, as she did not allow an earned run in a complete game effort.

Lindsey Hui went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Hannah Stone went 2 for 3 with two doubles, and RBI and two runs scored. Ally O’Brien had a big pinch-hit single and and RBI.

CAMPBELL 14,

MILFORD 1

Maddie Davis got the win in the circle for the 3-0 Cougars, allowing only two hits, striking out five over four innings. Sarah Corbett closed things with hitless ball and a strikeout.

Riley Gamache, Catherine Carignan, Alexa Robert, Kyliegh Wilnus and Chloe Steininger each had two hits for the Cougars, who had 14 in all.

GIRLS TRACK

MERRIMACK 78,

LONDONDERRY 56

The Tomahawks were led by sophomore Kailey Dillon who scored 14.25 points for the team by winning the 300 meter hurdles and long jump.  She also ran on the winning 4x100m relay team and finished 2nd in the triple jump.  Freshman, Alexis Best scored 12.25 points in winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes. She also ran on the winning 4×100 relay team and finished 3rd in the long jump. 

Other Merrimack winners included Lilly Farrell in the triple jump, Mary Vance in the high jump (also ran on the winning 4x100m relay team).

Adele Alexander won the 1600m run, and freshman Mia Getchell scored her first five varsity points in winning the shot put.

BOYS TRACK

LONDONDERRY 70,

MERRIMACK 53

The Tomahawks got wins by Tyler Pencinger in the 200, Jay Haddad (300 hurdles), Daniel Bartus (pole vault), Rami Aldrich (triple jump), and Owen Sadowski (javelin).

BISHOP GUERTIN 3,

SOUHEGAN 0

The Cards got their first win of the season (1-2) with set wins of 25-10, 25-14, 25-21.

D.J. Omogrosso had 10 kills and four blocks to lead BG, while Erik Wizboski (seven aces, four kills, nine assists) and Sam Dufoe (12 assists) helped out as well.

The two teams see each other again in Amherst on Thursday.
