One is a heavy favorite, one could be considered a slight underdog.

Will it be a 2 for 2 night for area high school girls basketball teams in state semifinals?

The heavy favorite, of course, would be 15-0 Bishop Guertin, which takes on Londonderry in the Division I semis at Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, Campbell (12-2) will battle rival Conant in the Division III semifinals at 7 p.m. at Manchester’s Trinty High School.

Here’s a look:

DIVISION I SEMIS

The Cards, of course, are rolling, and if they can win and Bedford can beat Portsmouth, the expected title match will take place on Sunday at Sanborn, time tba.

The team comprised mainly of sophomores led by the likes of Meghan Stack, Olivia Murray, Kailee McDonald, etc. beat the Lancers twice during the regular season but Londonderry gave them a tougher time in the second game. In the first one, the Cards rolled, 80-26; but it was closer at Londonderry, 53-36.

“We had two very, very different games with Londonderry,” Kreick said. “We went to their place (in the second game) and they gave us all we could handle the first 20 minutes of the game.

“I can’t remember a Londonderry team that wasn’t better at the end of the year than the beginning of the year. They did this last year, they got to the Final Four with a team that wasn’t expected to get there. They’ll be tough.”

So will the Cards, who are living in the moment.

“These guys are young,” Kreick said, “and they’re going to a Final Four.”

DIVISION III

Campbell’s key trio of center Tori Allen, forward Karleigh Schultz, and point guard Riley Gamache keeps marching along.

Everyone got a glimpse of how good they could be last year when they nearly upset Conant in the quarters. Now they get another crack at the Orioles, who are led by top player Liz Gonyea.

“We know what we’re up against with Conant,” Cougars coach Sean Hogan said. “They’re kind of the mark of the league, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.

“Last year’s quarterfinal match against Conant was a turning point for our program in a good way. We put a lot of effort into game planning and gave ourselves some chances.”

The plan is simple.

“We’ve got to shut them down defensively,” Hogan said. “Liz Gonyea is one of if not the best defensive player in the state. They’ve got a couple of girls who can shoot the ball. We’ve got to turn them over, and force them to play our style of basketball. That’s what we’re looking to do, play defense.”
