It’s the NHIAA’s State Swim and Dive Meet Weekend, but it’s not exactly a case of “Everybody into the pool.”
No, not all at once. Instead, a few at a time at the Salem Workout Club Saturday (Division I) and Sunday (Division II) and diving today (3 p.m. at Carter Community Building in Lebanon).
Schools, mainly for the swimming, will run the events a few at a time – relays will not be held – and then the results will be merged and could be delayed. There will be three swimming sessions and two diving sessions.
It could impact some things, like the Bishop Guertin High School boys’ chances at a Division I fourpeat.
“The athletes’ well-being came first in all decisions,” Guertin coach Christine Rousseau said. “Some of the changes are hard to accept but we as we have all learned, adjustments neded to be made to have a season and state meet.”
Rousseau said the plan is for the results to be merged, looked over, double checked and then announced Sunday or Monday.
The Cards have always made hay in the relay events with a lot of points, especially with regard to the boys, so that could be a big factor. Individually Rousseau looks to seniors Jack Januario and Matt Crane – last year’s Telegraph Boys Swimmer of the Year – to lead the way in a meet in which the challengers appear to be Bedford and Exeter.
“We’re ecstatic we’ve had a season and that we’re having a state meet,” Nashua South coach Jenelle Dolan said. “This is obviously a very difficult year for us but we’re grateful for the opportunity.”
South has six swimmers and one diver competing, led by returning state dive champion Su Ami White. Also, 50/100 freestyle senior Haleigh Swabowicz, Sarthak Mandavia, Katrina Norton, Josephine Matthew and Haylee Dolan for the girls, and Jason Wimmer for the boys.
North has Trevor Ryan, a senior, competing in the diving while Ana Haight, Evelyn Duffy and Owen White are swimming.
In Division I girls, Bedford is the clear cut favorite. “Their depth is incredible,” Rousseau said. “They could have three swimmers place in each event.”
Besides North’s White in the diving, Merrimack freshman Meredith Lubelczyk and Guertin junior Moria Thompson.
In Division II, keep an eye on Milford’s Andrew Bartolomucci, who won two events last year. “He’s hoping to add two more titles,” Spartans coach Nancy McManus said.
Two other swimmers are Lillian Chapell and Noah McCandless. “Lillian has improved her times significantly and is hoping for some fast swims,” McManus said, adding McCandless is relatively new to the sport but fast and could get some podium time.
As for logistics, in Divison I Alvirne, North, South and Bishop Guertin are in the second session Saturday at 12:30 p.m., with Merrimack in the third at 4:30.
Sunday, in Division II, Hollis Brookline is in the first session at 10:30 and Souhegan and Milford in the second session at 2:30.
