A high school wrestling postseason unlike any we’ve seen begins today.
Thanks to COVID, the traditional Division Meets that decide team champions as well as individual division weight class champions is scrapped.
In its place is a traditional team tournament similar to most other sports, and it starts at 4 p.m. with No. 10 Souhegan visiting No. 7 Alvirne in a Division II prelim. The match was originally slated for 6 but the Broncos have a girls hoop makeup game at home at 7.
Nashua North is the lone Division I team in the area competing, as Nashua South opted out due to COVID concerns. The No. 4 seeded Titans after the draw will get a first round bye and meet No. 5 Windham in the quarterfinals Saturday at 10 a.m.at North. Of course the winner will have its hands full with a potential semifinal matchup next week vs. No. 1 Timberlane. The Owls will face the winner of the Pinkerton-Exeter prelim in the quarters.
In Division II, defending champion Bishop Guertin is the top seed and Hollis Brookline is No. 2.
The Cards get a bye, set to face the winner of the Portsmouth-Manchester West prelim (8-9) in Saturday’s quarters. Right now match time at BG is set for 6 p.m., but times are subject to change.
Merrimack, seeded No. 5, is in the same bracket with the Cards. To set up that potential semifinal the ‘Hawks will have to defeat No. 4 Winnacunnet in the quarters in Hampton on Saturday at the early time of 9 a.m.
Today’s Broncos-Sabers winner visits No. 2 Hollis Brookline on Saturday, slated as of now for 6 p.m.
“We’re just excited to have the opportunity to host at least one dual in the tournament and hopefully make a deep run from here,” HB coach Brian Bumpus said. “Alvirne-Souhegan should be a great dual with some great matchups and will be a good opportunity for us to see where both teams are at as we prepare for Saturday.”
Tonight will be a chance to see top Bronco senior wrestler Kyle Gora in his final home match.
The winner of the Hollis Brookline quarterfinal will take on the winner of Saturday’s Goffstown-Spaulding match in next Wednesday’s semis.
