High School Notebook: BG’s depth to be put to the test

The unique local winter high school sports season, especially in terms of scheduling, gets back in gear today after a two-day pause due to weather, not the pandemic.
But some teams will have some interesting schedule twists.
The Bishop Guertin High School boys basketball team moves to the top of that list. After having Tuesday night’s home game vs. Windham and former Cardinal Joe Dasilva postponed, the Cards rescheduled it for Thursday.
But what that does is gives them a very unique three straight nights of games, because they face Concord today at 6 following the girls contest at 4 p.m. at the Colligadome, and they were already scheduled to visit Windham on Friday at 6. There you go, three games in three nights. It should certainly test the Cards’ depth.
But no worries on the BG end, for the simple reason is a game is valuable commodity these days.
“These guys just want to play games,” Guertin coach John Fisher said. “We’re in a unique environment. When I go into practice, you never know what you’re going to find (in terms of virus impacts).
“I used to stress about having two or three days of practice before a game. But now, who gives a flying banana? We just want to play.”
Nashua North boys basketball doesn’t have three straight games, but the Titans do have two in less than 24 hours against the same opponent.
They are slated to make up last night’s postponed game with Londonderry on Friday at 4 p.m. But, while that’s considered the Lancers’ home game, it will be played at North. And the two teams face each other on Thursday at Titans Gym at 6 p.m.
North girls will also face Londonderry on Thursday and Friday as well, but Thursday’s game is at Londonderry.
Other games moved to tonight include Nashua South boys at Merrimack at 7 p.m., and Alvirne at Salem girls, and the Salem at Alvirne boys.
Another local game of interest will be a Division II boys game, Pelham at Hollis Brookline at 5 p.m.
KEY WRESTLING MATCH
While Thursday’s local schedule features a handful of basketball games that is usually an off night, it also features a key Division II wrestling match as well.
Wednesday is usually a big wrestling night, but with the Cavs boys hoop team hosting Pelham that night, the Bishop Guertin at HB wrestling match was moved to Thursday at 6 in Hollis.
The Cards, after being on pause due to virus issues, have come back with a vengance, getting wins in three matches. HB, who wrestled out of division recently – including a shutout loss to Division I power Timberlane and a win over Nashua South – got back into Division II with a win last Saturday over Merriamack. This should be a good one.
TITLE MEETS COMING UP
Next week skiing, which has had a brief season, will have its divsional championship meets next week, mainly Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Also, a week from Sunday, on Feb. 14, will be the Gymnastics State Meet at A2 Gymnastics in Salem with three different sessions at 8 a.m., 12:30 and 5 p.m.
And the wrestling prelims will take place on Feb. 17. See, the winter may be flying by after all.
