FOOTBALL FRIDAY: A capsule look at Week 5 local games

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Oct 23, 2020

Telegraph photo by TOM KING Curtis Harris-Lopez and his Nashua North teammates are back in action tonight, their first game since they downed Bishop Guertin two weeks ago.

It’s a good thing there’s never a quiz on the weekly local high school football schedule; we’d all flunk it.

Early in the week, the NHIAA Football Committee announced that some regular season finales would be pushed aside for Division I conference play-in games, so instead of Bishop Guertin facing Nashua South on Saturday night at Stellos Stadium, the Cards will travel to Keene for a play-in – even though they are the higher seed.

Nashua South, meanwhile, will visit Bedford on Friday night. Thus, here is a look at this weekend’s games. As always check in school websites, etc. for any potential changes:

DIVISION I PLAY-IN

BISHOP GUERTIN (1-3) at KEENE (0-2)

WHEN: Tonight at 7.

WHERE: Keene’s Alumni Field.

LAST YEAR: BG 28, Keene 0

LAST WEEK: Lebanon 21, Keene 0; BG 28, Trinity 7.

FYI: This isn’t a trip the Cardinals really want to make, but the Blackbirds – who reportedly were fine traveling to Dover if they had to for their originally scheduled game – are prohibited by school officials from coming to Nashua. The Cards are hoping to get their offense untracked once again, but know this is a tough place to play. Dylan Santosuosso should be at the controls under center; the team’s other QB, Josh Larson, was at mid-week doing some light practice but was still in concussion protocol. Tanner Payne will be Keene’s QB. The game will likely boil down to turnovers.

REGULAR SEASON

DIVISION I

LONDONDERRY (3-1) at NASHUA NORTH (2-0)

WHEN: Tonight, 6:30.

WHERE: Nashua’s Stellos Stadium.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

LAST WEEK: Londonderry 41, Windham 0; North did not play.

FYI: Many have been circling this game for awhile, and it’s big for the Titans if the NHIAA plan is to make football records count for seedings rather than the blind draws of other sports. Of course the Lancers, whose only loss was to Bedford, will try to contain Curtis Harris-Lopez. The Titan defense, strong so far, will try to contain Lancer Dylan McEachern, who had 210 yards of total offense vs. Windham, including 164 yards rushing. Should be a good one.

NASHUA SOUTH (1-2) at BEDFORD (3-1)

WHEN: Tonight at 7.

WHERE: Bedford High School.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

LAST WEEK: Bedford 42, Concord 20; Nashua South did not play.

FYI: The Bulldogs re-established themselves as a contender with their 26-7 win at Londonderry two weeks ago, a game in which they capitalized on turnovers plus the two-TD running of Solomon Sanchez.South hopes to shake the rust off with quarterback Chris Keefe manning the offense and Jason Compoh the defense. He was at defensive end in the team’s win over Alvirne two weeks ago.

ALVIRNE (0-3) at MERRIMACK (1-1)

WHEN: Tonight, 6:30.

WHERE: MHS Student Memorial Field.

LAST WEEK: Salem 48, Merrimack 13; Alvirne did not play.

FYI: The Broncos will also try to shake some of the rust off, led by QB Kyle Gora and big receiver Alvin Thumi and hope to be healthier up front than they were two weeks ago. Merrimack had such an unsettled week before the Salem loss, with a schedule change, that they should be in better shape for this one. QB Kyle Crampton and back Jake Trahan, as always, will be Tomahawk keys.

DIVISION II

SOUHEGAN (4-0) at TIMBERLANE (2-2)

WHEN: Tonight, 6:30.

WHERE: Timberlane Regional in Plaistow.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

LAST WEEK: Souhegan 55, Manchester West 6; Hollis Brookline 34, Timberlane 8.

FYI: The Owls will be extremely challenged by a team that loves to throw the ball (Austin Jain, four TD passes last week). They had trouble defending the pass last week vs. the Cavaliers. Timberlane’s best player on offense appears to be QB Ethan Stewart.

MILFORD (1-2) at HOLLIS BROOKLINE (2-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 2 p.m.

WHERE: Hollis Brookline High School.

EARLIER THIS SEASON: Milford 26, Hollis Brookline 24.

LAST WEEK: Pelham 34, Milford 13; Hollis Brookline 34, Timberlane 8.

FYI: The Cavaliers seem to be hitting their stride, and last week rediscovered their passing game with QB Drew Gryniewicz tossing four TD passes. The Spartans couldn’t contain HB back Marc-Andre Thermitus (a whopping 318 yards rushing) in the first meeting but also got great production from QB Charlie Urda and their rushing attack. Should be a great rematch.

DIVISION III

TRINITY (2-2) at CAMPBELL (2-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 2 p.m.

WHERE: CHS in Litchfield.

LAST YEAR: Trinity 31, Campbell 24.

LAST WEEK: BG 28, Trinity 7; Campbell 20, Sanborn 16.

FYI: The Cougars had to rally last week to get the win with just under three minutes left, but are playing much better defensively than earlier in the season. And Jackson Canaley is coming of age as a quarterback. Malith Yor is a key back for Trinity.
