Late goal lifts South over North; Titans, Broncos split in soccer

Telegraph photo by TOM KING Nashua North goalie Madison Goulet tries to get to the ball before Nashua South's Soleil Dubois, left, or Kaitlyn West. Dubois got their first and scored the game-winner in the Panthers' 2-1 win Thursday at Stellos Stadium.
NASHUA – The game was put together in a hurry, but it may have been the best Nashua High School North-South encounter of the fall season.
Nashua South’s Soleil Dubois scored during a mad scramble near the North goal with 1:22 left to give the Panthers a 2-1 field hockey win over their rivals.
The game was added to the schedule to help fill the void by other cancellations. South (3-4-1) snapped a four-game losing streak.
North (0-7) actually scored first – the Titans’ first goal of the season – on a tally by Reagan Belanger. South’s Kaitlyn West, who has hurt the Titans in two previous games, tied the score before the half, 1-1.
“It took them scoring a goal to get us a little fired up today,” said South coach Ciki McIntire, whose team hosts Merrimack in a Division I play-in game at Stellos on Monday. “It was good to play North today, get a little practice in. We still have a lot to work on.”
North, meanwhile, heads to Keene in the prelims next Wednesday.
“Reagan has been killing it in practice,” North coach Robert Hailey said. “First time we had a lead, our first goal.
“I tell you, we were really flat during warmups, I didn’t know what to expect. The effort’s been there all year; obviously the results haven’t gone our way but there’s been a few games, they’re playing well, there’s a lot of fight in them and they’re skills are improving.”
“It was a fun game,” McIntire said. “I knew North would be really tough, they had improved a lot during the course of the season. We couldn’t take them lightly.
Courtney Tello had eight saves in the Panther goal while Madison Goulet, who was tough during that scramble with a couple of stops before the game-winner, had 15 saves in all in the North net.
