FOOTBALL FRIDAY: A capsule look at other local games

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Sep 25, 2020

Telegraph file ;photo by TOM KING Bishop Guertin's Brendan Callahan (7), who returned late last season from a knee injury, could be a key for the Cardinals on both sides of the ball this season.

Besides the epic Nashua North-South opener, there are a lot of other games on the area schedule, with two all-local matchups:

DIVISION I

BISHOP GUERTIN AT MERRIMACK

WHEN: Tonight, 6:30.

WHERE: Merrimack High School ‘s Student Memorial Field.

LAST YEAR: Merrimack 35, Bishop Guertin 19.

FYI: Both teams look strong at quarterback, with Kyle Crampton back for the Tomahawks and Dylan Santosuosso and Josh Larson back for the Cards, as is talented receiver-defensive back Brendan Callahan. It all depends on who wins the battle in the trenches.

ALVIRNE AT SALEM

WHEN: Tonight, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Salem High School (Grant Field)

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: This will be a tough transition for Alvirne, which really did not want to move up from Division II, where it was very competitive for two seasons (finals, semis). Quarterback-linebacker Kyle Gora is the team’s best player but Alvirne will be hard-pressed up front. But you never know.

DIVISION II

HOLLIS BROOKLINE AT SOUHEGAN

WHEN: Tonight, 6:30.

WHERE: Souhegan High School’s Saber Field

LAST YEAR: Hollis Brookline 27, Souhegan 7.

FYI: The defending champion Cavaliers will be looking to fill the quarterback void left by graduation, and it could be either senior Tyler Trombley or juniors Riley McQuilken and Keith Hubert. HB has a bevy of backs to both catch and run.

The Sabers have a lot of talent back, starting with returnees and potential QBs Austin Jain and Luke Manning, who can also be used in other skill areas. Should be a great game.

DIVISION III

MONADNOCK AT CAMPELL

WHEN: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Campbell High School.

LAST YEAR: Campbell 40, Monadnock 27.

FYI: This has been one of Division III’s better rivalries, with two straight title game matchups in 2017-18. Monadnock has a talented receiver in Zion Carroll and top lineman in Dylan Cashman; Campbell senior linebacker Hunter Caron will see a lot of time running the ball as well. A great opening matchup.
