NASHUA – It was quite a senior year for Bishop Guertin track and field athlete Caroline Fischer, despite not having a spring season.

And it couldn’t have ended any better.

Fischer was named the New Hampshire Gatorade Girls Track and Field Player of the Year late this week.

That comes on the heels of her winning the New Hampshire Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year after her highly successful fall season.

In March, Fischer posted a time of 10:51.6 in the two-mile run at the Ocean Breeze Miles Mania Meet in Staten Island, N.Y. That was the 25th-ranked nation’s prep performance for indoors. The Providence College-bound athlete also won the cross country Meet of Champions in the fall and last spring swept the 800, 1600 and 3200 in the Division I State Meet.

Fischer is a four-time All-New England runner, and a 16-time All-State selection.

What made her performance even more incredible was she had battled Lyme disease her last three years at BG.

“She may very well be the most courageous and toughest kid that I have ever seen at the high school level,” Exeter coach Scascitelli said in a Gatorade release about the award. “Caroline Fischer is one of the finest distance runners in New Hampshire, New England, and the nation.”

Academics and community work/character of high standards also play a part in the award. Fischer had a 3.82 GPA at Guertin, and also served on the leadership team of Bishop Guertin’s campus ministry, helping to perform community outreach work as well as working as a preschool religious education volunteer in the Seeds/Promises program. She also volunteered at several local road races.

Fischer is the first Bishop Guertin girls track and field athlete to win the Gatorade Player of the Year award.
