NASHUA – Paul Rousseau had a good winter, and he’s ending the spring on a good note as well.

The Bishop Guertin High School varsity wrestling coach, whose Cardinals won the Division II championship, has been named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) High School Boys Head Coach of the Year for New Hampshire.

“I’m totally surprised,” Rousseau said on Tuesday. “That’s a great award. I’m honored, and I’m speechless.”

The honor made Rousseau a finalist for an even bigger regional award, the NWCA Section 1 Coach of the Year Award. That honor ultimately went to Bryan Stoll, coach of Delbarton School in Morristown, N.J. The NWCA Section 1 includes New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York.

It’s the second coaching award for Rousseau since his Cardinals won the state crown, their first ever for wrestling, buoyed by six individual Division II state weight class titles. All of that combined to earn him the Division II New Hampshire Coaches Association All-State Coach of the Year award back in March.

“Our Scholastic Coach of the Year Awards Program which honors our nation’s coaches who work tirelessly on behalf of their athletes is one of my favorite NWCA initiatives,” NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer said. “At a time when coaches are needed now more than ever, we get to take time and thank the entire profession by recognizing their peers at the state, section, and national levels. Thanks to those who we call ‘Coach’.”
