North’s Miranda a triple winner; other schools hand out honors

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Jun 10, 2020

Telegraph file photo by TOM KING Nashua North graduating senior Alexis Miranda was a triple scholarship winner on Monday.

NASHUA – Alexis Miranda has hit her share of triples during her high school and youth softball career.

But not like the one she hit on Monday. The graduating Nashua High School North senior was awarded not one, not two, but three athletic scholarships.

The former Titan first baseman, who will play volleyball and softball while attending SUNY Cobleskill beginning in the fall, first found out she was awarded the Zachary M.Tompkins Memorial Fund Athletic Scholarship in the amount of $10,000. The award is in memory of Tompkins, an 11-year-old Hudson athlete who passed away in his sleep a decade ago due to Long QT Syndrome, or LQTS. It’s an inherited electro-physiological disorder that can stop the heart without warning.

Then Miranda found out she was awarded a North Athletic Booster Scholarship, one of five to get that award. The other four were Samantha Gadbois, Chukwuemeka Okarie, her Titan softball teammate Nicole Perault, and Nicholas Roscoe. Finally, she was awarded the Hesser College Alumni Scholarship.

“Wow,” Miranda posted on social media, “today is a really good day.”

That’s for sure.

South’s McIntire is tops

More good news for another local athlete, as Nashua South field hockey, basketball and lacrosse standout Kirsten McIntire was awarded the Nashua Athletics Outstanding Female Athlete Award.

McIntire, who will play lacrosse next spring at Merrimack College, was a top player on the South field hockey team as well as earning All-State honors. She was a member of the Telegraph All-Area Girls Basketball team and also a top lacrosse player for the Panthers for the last couple of seasons. She was named to the 2019 Division I First Team All-State Girls Lacrosse squad.

Alvirne awards

Alvirne had its annual Athletic Awards Night recently in a virtual setting, airing it on Hudson Community TV.

The male and female Athletes of the Year went to track standout Davonte McKoy-Sophos and soccer, hoop and tennis player Sara Ruigrok.

The Sportsmanship Awards went to Tommy Keegan, Anthony DeRosa And Alyssa Anderson.

Milford three-sport stars

Meanwhile, Milford High School has honored their NHIAA Three Sport Athlete Award winners. The NHIAA awards seniors who have participated in an NHIAA sanctioned sport for each season of their high school career. The participation can be at any level, not just varsity. This includes freshmen as well as junior varsity.

Milford’s winners are Lori DeMambro, Kyle Forsley, Sydney Kolasinski, Robyn Krafft, Elisabeth Rodil, and Joe Shepard.

Looking ahead

Schools are beginning to have athletes register for the fall sports season – not knowing, of course, what that season may look like.

The general start dates – check with your school – are August 10 for bass fishing, Aug. 14 for football, and Aug. 17 for boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country, girls volleyball, golf, spirit, and field hockey.

Nashua registration is open and athletes should go to the North or South athletic websites to register. Milford has announced that those interested in playing a fall sport should email student name and incoming grade, student email address, parent name and email address, and fall sport of interest to Athletic Director Marc Maurais at marc.maurais@milfordk.
