HOLLIS – Normally, 36 points are enough to win a high school football game in most parts of New Hampshire. But as the Alvirne Broncos learned on Saturday, the Hollis Brookline Cavaliers seem to be able to pull a few touchdowns out of the swamp at will.

The Cavaliers earned a 51-36 win over Alvirne on Saturday, their third game this season this year with over 50 points and third this year at home with more than 40 points.

Hollis Brookline scored on five of its six first-half drives, four touchdowns and soccer star Andy Basque’s first career field goal.

Marc-Andre Thermitus scored the first touchdown on a six-yard run, with Sander Wimmer adding a 14-yard scoring run and a two-yard run along to go with a 35-yard passing score to Shea Philbrook.

Not to be outdone, Alvirne’s Alec Prescott broke through for a 59-yard scoring run and quarterback Kyle Gora found Kyle Boucher on a 64-yard touchdown pass in the first half. Still, a stalled opening nine-play drive and an interception by Sander’s brother Quinten kept the visitors at a 30-14 disadvantage heading into the half.

Alvirne’s Grady Hudson opened the second half with an 80-yard touchdown return and a two-point conversion by Alex Giuffrida brought the contest back within one score. However, another Quinten Wimmer interception and the Cavaliers’ steady scoring eventually put the game out of reach.

Sander Wimmer and Thermitus added second-half goal-line rushing touchdowns and Wimmer found Blake Bergerson for a two-yard passing score.

Even though Alvirne couldn’t stop Hollis Brookline’s attack, the Broncos managed to hang around, with Hudson taking a handoff and then finding Paul Manzi in the end zone for a 22-yard passing score and Gora hitting Hudson for a separate 22-yard passing touchdown.

While it didn’t impact the final score, if there was one weakness for the Cavaliers on Saturday, it was their ability to run out the clock and put away a win, as grinding out a game goes against their high-octane philosophy.

“We know that (Alvirne) doesn’t give up. Over the last two years, we told our team in the film study that they are the cardiac kids. They just do not quit,” said Hollis Brookline Head Coach Chris Lones. “You saw it against Souhegan, you saw it against Milford, you saw it last year against Saint Thomas. They just do not quit, and it’s a credit to them.”

Still, it was hard to find any significant faults with Hollis Brookline’s day.

“(Hollis Brookline is) a very good football team, and this is a very tough place to play, they played pretty much a perfect game, “said Alvirne Head Coach Tarek Rothe. “They threw the ball all over the place, did not make any turnovers, and got some balls deep that they got in 50/50 balls. Kudos to them, they just played a better football game than we did today.”

Quinten Wimmer finished the day 21-for-25 with 366 passing yards and 69 yards on the ground. Thermitus also added 101 yards for the Cavaliers.

Gora put in 210 yards through the air for Alvirne, connecting on 15 of his 27 passing attempts, providing 70 yards on the ground as well for the Broncos.

With the win, Hollis Brookline (6-2) avoids what might have been a playoff play-in game next week against St. Thomas Aquinas (4-4). As of Saturday night, they hold the seventh seed in the NHIAA Division II Football Playoffs. Alvirne (6-2) holds an edge against the Cavaliers on strength-of-schedule alone, but could see their seeding impacted next week with a showdown against Milford (7-1(
