The Bishop Guertin High School football team is still hanging in there.

The Cardinals improved to 5-3, keeping their tenuous playoff hopes alive with a 14-0 win Friday night in Rochester over Spaulding (2-6).

Guertin began its second straight win by going 19 plays on its first possession and ate up most of the first quarter as Ethan Holt scored a rushing TD.

Guertin took that lead into the half and got a second rushing TD by quarterback Dylan Santosuosso in the second half. Toby Therrien kicked both PATs.

“It was a great defensive performance,” Cards coach John Trisciani said. “I’m happy for the players that they are winning games. There’s always room to improve.”

The Cards are currently tied with Merrimack at 5-3 for the final East-West playoff spot, but would lose out on a tiebreaker after being beaten by the Tomahawks two weeks ago.
