NASHUA – Coincidence? Not really.

On Bishop Guertin volleyball’s “Dig Pink Night,” for breast cancer awareness, the Cardinals simply never stopped fighting.

Down two games to one and trailing 11-1 and then 18-8 in the fourth game, Guertin found one final gallant stand in their hearts and rallied to knock off Nashua North, 15-13, in the fifth.

“Just a great comeback,” said Cardinals’ coach Abby Savard, whose club improved to 7-8 as it fights for one of the final remaining playoff sports in Division I. “This was a big one.”

The final tally in this roller-coaster of a match was 16-25, 25-15, 22-25, 26-24 and 15-13.

North threw all it had at the Cardinals. Abby Coy, despite tweaking a knee in the second game, served lasers all night. Kelsey Laliberte, Alexis Miranda and Haley Stanton played huge up front.

The Cards just kept coming.

Lefty Caroline Sullivan sparked the comeback in the fourth with some nasty serving. It went from 20-9 to 20-17, giving Guertin a pulse.

Facing a match point, trailing 23-24, Kristen Coumas rose up over the net for a block and winner, evening things at 24-24 and electrifying the Cards’ student section.

Elizabeth Knapp ripped a kill from the back row, and the southpaw Sullivan left no doubt with a chance from the right side, pounding it to the floor to even things at two apiece and force the fifth.

The teams see-sawed on the lead until a North misfire and a Lydia Litvak service ace put the Cards up 14-12.

North saved one match point, but the lefty surfaced one last time and end it with her team-high 10th kill of the night.

Maddy Keating also had 10 kills for the Cardinals. Libby Knapp had eight kills with four aces. Coumas passed out 17 assists, and Alicia Glasheen had 15.

The teams return to the floor on Friday night with Guertin going to Londonderry and North hosting Merrimack.
