High School Highlights: Merrimack football wins opener

The Tomahawks survived a wild third quarter in Rochester to capture their season opener, and their key players all played key roles.

Devin Wood had two receiving TDs, while back Zach Twardosky had two rushing TDs. Also, Jared Dyer had a passing and a rushing score.

Merrimack was down 7-0 but went into halftime up 14-7. The Tomahawks took advantage of a Red Raider fumble on the opening drive of the second half to go up 21-7, but the hosts answered with a kickoff return for a TD to get back to within seven.

“The start of the third quarter was crazy,” Merrimack coach Kip Jackson said.

Boys soccer

Hollis Brookline 5,

Coe-Brown 2

The Cavaliers (1-2) pick up their first win by defeating Coe-Brown. Andy Basque led the scoring with two goals. Bryan Wright, Aidan Dufoe and Ethan Smith contributed one each in the win. Ryan Coutu was all over the net making 12 saves.

Bow 3, Souhegan 2

The Sabers (0-3) played well whistle to whistle, but fell just short in the end. Mike Estabrook scored on a penalty kick and Ethan Ramm scored on an assist by Colin Burke. Jake Morrisette played well in net making nine saves.

Nashua South 4

Portsmouth 1

Max Lopez kicked in three goals in the Panthers (2-0) triumph Friday afternoon. Jake Dukeshire added another goal.

Girls soccer

Bedford 5,

Merrimack 1

The Tomahawks (0-2) were ousted at home by Bedford. Abby Morgan scored the lone goal for Merrimack. Playing well in the loss were Amber Bacon, Riley Streeper and Lucy Cote.

Campbell 7,

Conant 1

The Cougars improve to 3-0, after a strong team performance.

Milford 3,

Coe-Brown 2

Aspen Tlapa knocked in the game winning goal for the Spartans (2-0) at the end. Rachael Gizzonio and Mikayla Thompson each scored in the effort. Goalie Jade Gregg made six saves.

Wilton-Lynde. 11, Farmington 1

The Warriors (3-0) once again played dominant offense to secure the win. Elizabeth Jacob (three assists) led the scoring with four goals and Sam Yurcak (one assist) had three goals. Brooke Lane (three assists), Sophia Sistachs, Mairead Markey and Abbey Dowling added one goal each.

Hollis Brookline 4,

Plymouth 0

The Cavaliers shutout Plymouth to get their second win of the early season. Christina Balsamo, Tasha White, Maddie Harley and Renee LeBlanc each scored.

Field hockey

Bishop Guertin 5,

Central 0

The Cardinals (2-0) were able to blank Central, behind Brooke Yabroudy’s three goals. Rylee Bouvier had two assists with her one goal. Stephanie Coulombe added one goal; Britney Pearson and Lindsay Hult each had one assist.

Girls volleyball

Milford 3, West 0

The Spartans start their season with a clean sweep. Milford won by the scores of 25-4, 25-8, 25-7. Emma Tronkowski (six assists, five aces, four kills), Marissa Spirito (five aces, two kills) and Robyn Krafft (five kills, three aces) led the way.

Exeter 3,

Merrimack 0

The Tomahawks dropped their opening game 18-25, 22-25, 23-25. Anna Niezrecki had 15 digs, Isabella Smith tossed 22 assists and Anya Carver had a complete game of 14 kills and 14 digs for the locals.

Golf

Bedford 193,

Alvirne 226, BG 227, Central 249

The Cardinals finished third in the four team contest at Manchester Country Club. Ryan Horgan shot a 43, Connor Bouvier had a 45, Aaron Pratt and Jack Fitzgerald both shot a 46 and Dean Liakos ended the day with a 47.
