As usual, free agency giveth and taketh away, and that was certainly the case for the New England Patriots on Wednesday.
First, the giveth:
The Patriots Wednesday announced that they have signed free agent DB Terrance Mitchell, who played with the Houston Texans last season. Mitchell, 29, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with Chicago (2014-15), Dallas (2015), Kansas City (2016-17), Cleveland (2018-20) and then the Texans.
Last season, Mitchell played in 14 games with 13 starts for Houston and accumulated 59 total tackles, one interception and three forced fumbles. He could be an important addition after the Patriots lost starting corner J.C. Jackson in free agency to the Los Angeles Chargers.
The 5-foot-11, 191-pounder originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick by Dallas out of Oregon in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was waived by Dallas at the end of training camp in 2014 and was signed by Chicago to the practice squad.
And then Mitchell began to bounce around the league. He began the 2015 season with Chicago but was released and signed by Dallas to the practice squad before joining the 53-man roster. Mitchell was claimed off waivers by Houston after being cut by Dallas in June of 2016 and was released by Houston at the end of training camp before being signed by Kansas City where he started his tenure as a Chief on the practice squad.
Following the 2017 season he was signed by Cleveland as an unrestricted free agent and then signed by Houston as an unrestricted free agent on March 24, 2021. He was released by Houston on March 10, 2022.
Despite all that moving around, Mitchell has played in 83 regular-season games with 51 starts and has registered 266 total tackles, one sack, eight interceptions, 59 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. In addition, he has played in four postseason games with three starts and has 14 total tackles.
BOLDEN, JOHNSON TO RAIDERS
Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels obviously has a lot of knowledge of Patriots players, and yesterday he reportedly added two.
The Raiders agreed to a one-year deal with Jakob Johnson, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. Johnson spent the past three seasons in New England playing under McDaniels.
They also reportedly signed another Patriots back, Brandon Bolden, who basically had made his mark as a special teams player in two tenures in New England, but last year was also a key contributor on offense catching balls out of the backfield after veteran running back James White was lost for the season with a hip injury.
PATS DRAFT ORDER SET
The NFL finalized the draft order for late next month, announcing it on Wednesday. The Patriots will picke 21st overall in Round One and have seven picks, but no compensatory picks.
Their second round pick will be 54th overall, then they’ll go 85th overall (Round 3), 127th overall (Round 4), 170th overall (Round 5), 200th overall (Round 6) and 210th overall (also Round 6, from Rams).
Of course, knowing Bill Belichick’s penchant for Draft Day trades, expect some of that to change.
