Here’s a capsule look at the 2021 New England Patriots draft picks:
MAC JONES, QB, ALABAMA, NO. 15, 6-2, 214
The Patriots hope their quarterback of the future has arrived. Jones played in a pro style offense, was extremely accurate his one year as the Crimson Tide starter. Just doesn’t have great arm strength, but as he bulks up, that may change.
CHRISTIAN BARMORE, DT, ALABAMA, NO. 38, 6-5, 310
The Patriots traded up to get him and in a weak draft for defensive linemen, he stood out. Said to have handled double teams well, didn’t play much early on but finished with a flurry, including eight sacks.
RONNIE PERKINS, DE, OKLAHOMA, NO. 96, 6-3, 247
Perkins missed half the season due to a failed drug test, says he’s made amends, and he should fit in nicely with the Patriots. Quick, strong, can play the run and rush the passer.
RHAMONDRE STEVENSON, RB, OKLAHOMA, NO. 120, 6-0, 246
Stevenson also had to sit out the first half of his senior year due to an NCAA suspension but finished strong. A beast who will no doubt be a fullback type who can be good in short yardage and pass protection. Not a burner by any means, but he doesn’t have to be. Likely special teamer to start.
CAMERON McGRONE, LB, MICHIGAN, NO. 177, 6-1, 236
Lindy’s rated him as the sixth best outside linebacker in the draft, another familiar school for the Patriots. Had 26 tackles his junior year, two for loss, and half a sack in the abbreviated five-game Wolverine season. Said to be a good fit in the 4-3.
JOSHUA BLEDSOE, S, MISSOURI, NO. 188, 5-11, 201
Well, eventually Devin McCourty will retire and a spot will open up. The Patriots’ first sixth round pick is said to be a hard hitter, and was a former quarterback. He had 41 tackles last year in 10 games with six pass deflections. Could be more effective in the run game, but likely a special teamer if he makes the team.
WILLIAM SHERMAN, OT, COLORADO, NO. 197, 6-3, 304
A durable player, who played in every game the last three seasons. Has played both left tackle and right tackle, and the Patriots have linemen (Isaiah Wynn, Trent Brown, Ted Karras come to mind) who have one year left on their contracts. We’ll see.
TRE NIXON, WR, CENTRAL FLORIDA, NO. 242, 6-1, 187
Well, the Patriots added a receiver in the seventh round, and of course they did that one year with a guy named Edelman, right? There will be a ton of competition at the position, special teams is his only way of making it. Or a N’Keal Harry trade.
