The New England Patriots are bringing back Cam Newton to be their veteran quarterback on a one-year, $14 million deal, according to multiple reports this morning.
Newton, 31, last season played on a one-year deal completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His passing yards ranked him 24th in the NFL and many felt his arm lacked the strength to continue in the role of a starting quarterback.
His season, which ended with the Patriots finishing 7-9 and missing the playoffs, also took a bad turn when he tested positive for COVID-19 after the first few weeks, as he missed two weeks.
But with that kind of deal, the Patriots are apparently going to stick with Newton, as it’s unlikely they would bring in another veteran starter due to the dollars involved. Third-year veteran Jarrett Stidham is the only other QB on the Patriots roster.
Newton did add a dimension to the New England offense, however, as he rushed for 592 yards and 12 TDs.
