He’s back — but in a different uniform.

Former popular Boson Bruins captain Zdeno Chara makes his return to the TD Garden tonight, his first since signing with the Washington Capitals as a free agent and the Bruins and Caps square off at 7 p.m.

He’s played in all 21 games for the Capitals this season, averaging 19:24 of ice time. Chara is on pace to become the first player since 1997-98, both his first season and the NHL’s first season of tracking tie on ice, to average at least 19 minutes per game at the age of 43 or older. Chara has two goals and four assists this season for the Caps, who are 12-5-4, first in the East, just ahead of the 12-5-2 Bruins.

He has a message for Bruins fans.

“From day one when I signed with the Boston Bruins, I felt really connected with the Boston fans and the city of Boston,” Chara said. “So many great friendships and connections, we went through so many ups and downs together. We always felt the energy and support with us and behind us in those times. The best moment we probably shared was bringing the Stanley Cup back to Boston in 2011.

“I can’t tell you how much I appreciate and how lucky and blessed I am to share these celebrations with the fans, and everything they’ve done for me and my family. The communities I’ve been a part of, so I just want to thank them for everything they’ve done for me and my family, for the support and the love.”
