BOSTON — It appears Dustin Pedroia is ready to call it quits, although not officially, according to the Boston Globe.

The Boston Red Sox second baseman, who has played just nine games since 2018 due to left knee woes, won’t retire per se because he would have to forfeit the final year of his eight-year, $110 million contract that would pay him $12 million this season.

Instead the Red Sox and Pedroia are reportedly working on a settlement. It’s possible, reports say, that they could release him and reach an insurance-based settlement that would be close to that $12 million figure.

Pedroia, who played on the 2007 and 2013 Red Sox World Series championship teams, hit .299 with 140 homers and 725 RBIs in 1,512 games. He was drafted in the second round in 2004 and fans fell in love with his grit and hustle after he made it to the majors in 2006.
