SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Ian Book threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores in his final home game at Notre Dame, leading the second-ranked Fighting Irish to a 45-21 victory against Syracuse on Saturday.

The fifth-year senior led the Irish to a victory as a starter for the 30th time, the most ever for a Notre Dame quarterback. The Irish (10-0, 9-0 ACC, CFP No. 2) ran their winning streak to 16 games, best on the country, and their home winning streak to 24.

“It’s hard doing any 24 things consecutively — I have trouble doing two in a row.,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly joked after his team provided him with his 102nd victory in South Bend, three behind all-time Irish leader Knute Rockne. “It was about finishing for our seniors with a win at home and getting Ian into the record books as the winningest quarterback at Notre Dame.”

Next up for the Irish, who are playing this season in a pandemic as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, is the Dec. 19 league championship game in Charlotte, North Carolina. It will likely be a rematch against No. 4 Clemson.

Book was 24 for 37 for 285 yards, with touchdown passes of 21, 28 and 26 to Javon McKinley, who had seven receptions for 111 yards.

Book scored on runs of 28 and 17 yards and rushed for 53 yards while improving to 30-3 as a starter and passing Notre Dame greats Tom Clements, Ron Powlus and Brady Quinn for most victories as a starting quarterback.

Kyren Williams added 110 yards on 20 carries, giving him 1,011 for the season, and freshman Chris Tyree had a 94-yard TD run for Notre Dame’s final touchdown and finished with 109 rushing yards as Notre Dame totaled 283 on the ground and 568 total.

In other key games on Saturday:

VIRGINIA 43, BOSTON COLLEGE 32

Brennan Armstrong threw for a touchdown and ran 60 yards for another Saturday as Virginia beat Boston College for the first time ever.

Armstrong carried the ball 17 times and finished with 130 yards, including the 60-yarder in which he ran through the left side of the line and outran several defenders to the end zone, leading the Cavaliers (5-4, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) to their fourth straight victory. He passed for another 287 yards, including a 47-yard TD to Ra’Shaun Henry.

The Eagles (6-5, 5-5) played without injured starting quarterback Phil Jukovec and top running back David Bailey. Dennis Grosel filled in admirably, throwing for 520 yards and four scores, but two interceptions turned into 95- and 80-yard touchdown drives.

NO. 1 ALABAMA 55, LSU 17

If Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and receiver DeVonta Smith wind up as Heisman Trophy finalists, they can thank one another.

And the way they combined to spearhead a rout of LSU will be a prime example of why.

Jones and Smith connected eight times for 231 yards and three touchdowns, including two scoring passes longer that 60 yards, and Alabama clinchED the SEC West and lock in a date with No. 6 Florida in the conference title game.

NO. 3 OHIO STATE 52, MICHIGAN STATE 12

Justin Fields ran, passed and blocked for unbeaten Ohio State in its latest stylish victory.

And with coach Ryan Day away from the team following his positive COVID-19 test, Fields did his best to fill that role, too.

Fields threw for two touchdowns and ran for two Haskell Garrett scored on an interception for the Buckeyes, who were able to take the field after a coronavirus-related cancellation the previous weekend.

Ohio State (5-0, 5-0 Big Ten, No. 4 CFP) was without Day and a few other members of the coaching staff. The Buckeyes also had a list of 23 unavailable players. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson coached Ohio State in Day’s absence.

NO. 4 CLEMSON 45, VA. TECH 10

Trevor Lawrence had two touchdown runs and threw a scoring pass and Clemson set up a rematch against No. 2 Notre Dame in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.

The Tigers (9-1, 8-1) ended their regular-season schedule with a chance for a sixth consecutive conference title and revenge against Notre Dame after a 47-40 overtime loss in South Bend on Nov. 7 when Lawrence was sidelined by COVID-19. The conference title game will be played in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium.

NO. 5 TEXAS A&M 31, Auburn 20

Texas A&M looked every bit the playoff contender with a seemingly unstoppable offense and impenetrable defense — in the fourth quarter, at least.

And that was plenty as Kellen Mond passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third and the fifth-ranked Aggies scored 17 points in the fourth quarter of a come-from-behind win.

The Aggies (7-1, CFP No. 5) dominated the final quarter to win their sixth straight and remain in College Football Playoff contention. The Tigers (5-4), who have gone 0-3 against teams ranked in the top five at the time, led 20-14 entering the fourth.

NO. 6 FLORIDA 31, TENNESSEE 19

Kyle Trask threw for 433 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 6 Florida clinched a spot in the SEC championship game.

Trask, a front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, put together another impressive performance. He completed 35 of 49 passes without committing a turnover. He even had a 32-yard punt late in the game.

Kyle Pitts had seven receptions for 128 yards, helping the Gators (8-1, No. 6 CFP) wrap up the SEC’s East Division. Kadarius Toney finished with eight catches for 108 yards and a TD.

The aerial performance by Trask and company took on added significance with Florida struggling to run the ball, finishing with just 21 yards on the ground.

NO. 10 INDIANA 14, NO. 18 WISCONSIN 6

Jack Tuttle threw two touchdown passes in his first career start and Indiana’s defense made a stand in the final minute as Indiana’s victory snapped a 10-game skid in this series and enabled the Hoosiers (6-1, CFP No. 12) to tie a program record with its sixth Big Ten victory of the season. Indiana also earned six Big Ten wins in 1967 and 1987. The Hoosiers hadn’t beaten Wisconsin since 2002.

Wisconsin (2-2, No. 16 CFP) drove deep into Indiana territory on its final drive, but Graham Mertz’s fourth-and-10 pass to Chimere Dike from the 21 was broken up by Reese Taylor in the right corner of the end zone with 46 seconds left.

NO. 12 IOWA STATE 42, WEST VA. 6

Brock Purdy threw for 247 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 12 Iowa State dominated on defense in a 42-6 rout of West Virginia on Saturday to secure its first appearance in the Big 12 championship game.

The Cyclones (8-2, 8-1, No. 9 CFP) were assured a spot in the conference title game Dec. 19 when TCU finished its win over Oklahoma State about the same time as kickoff against the Mountaineers (5-4, 4-4).

Iowa State scored touchdowns on its first three possessions and finished with 483 total yards against the Big 12′s top defense while holding West Virginia to 263.
