FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, who has become a popular figure with the team after just three games, has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 and the NFL has announced Sunday’s game at the Kansas City Chiefs has been postponed and is expected to be played either Monday or Tuesday.
ESPN reported Newton’s positive test this morning and there is speculation the Patriots game with the Chiefs may be in jeopardy. The team was scheduled to leave for Kansas City today at 1 p.m. but that flight reportedly is now delayed while the Patriots await further test results and instructions from the NFL, according to ESPN. The team is not likely to travel today.
Kansas City Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu has also tested positive for COVID-19, the NFL Network reported.
The Patriots just after 11 a.m. issued the following statement:
“Late last night, we received notice that a Patriots player tested positive for COVID-19. The player immediately entered self-quarantine. Several additional players, coaches and staff who have been in close contact with the player received point of care tests this morning and all were negative for COVID-19.
“We are in close consultation with the NFL, as well as our team of independent doctors and specialists, and will follow their guidance regarding our scheduled trip to Kansas City and game against the Chiefs. The health and safety of our team, as well as our opponent, are of highest priority.”
The NFL then later issued a statement saying the game was postponed.
“The New England-Kansas City game scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday will be rescheduled to Monday or Tuesday after positive COVID-19 tests on both teams,” the statement said.
“In consultation with infectious disease experts, both clubs are working closely with the NFL and the NFLPA to evaluate multiple close contacts, perform additional testing and monitor developments. All decisions will be made with the health and safety of players, team and gameday personnel as our primary consideration.”
Newton has completed 62 of 91 passes for 714 yards, two TDs and two interceptions. He also has rushed 35 times for 149 yards and four TDs.
If the game is played, the Patriots options at quarterback are veteran backup Brian Hoyer, second-year player Jarrett Stidham, and a practice squad player, Jake Dolegala.
