Patriots agree to terms with Newton; also lose third rounder

The New England Patriots apparently gained a quarterback but lost a draft pick late Sunday.

The team last night agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Cam Newton to a one-year contract, according to multiple reports.

The deal, which won’t be made official until the former longtime Carolina Panther passes a physical exam, is said to be incentive-laden, and could be worth up to $7.5 million.

Also, the Patriots reportedly have lost a 2021 third round draft pick and were fined $1.1 million for having a TV crew filming the Cincinnati Bengals sideline last year during a Dec. 8 game vs. Cleveland. A team production crew was in Cleveland to film a part of a web series “Do Your Job” on a Patriots scout in the press box, but was discovered also filming the Bengals sidelines, which is against NFL rules.

Meanwhile, Newton started just two games for the Carolina Panthers last year before ending up on injured reserve and was released in the off-season. He was the top pick by the Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft and took the Panthers to a Super Bowl after winning the MVP with the team owning a 15-1 record in 2015.

Ironically, Newton’s 2019 season was cut short thanks to a lingering foot injury he suffered in a pre-season game with the Patriots last August.

Many felt the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newton and the Patriots would be a sensible marriage after the departure of Tom Brady to Tampa Bay, but there is still a faction that feels the team is thinking Jarrett Stidham can still win the No. 1 job.

The other quarterbacks who will be in training camp almost exactly a month from now – if there is no coronavirus related delay – are veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie free agents J’Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke.

Newton won the Heisman with Auburn in 2010. He has thrown for 29,041 yards and 182 touchdowns, plus 108 interceptions in his NFL career. Also, he’s rushed for 4,806 yards and 58 TDs, but his rushing days appear to be behind him. He’s been reportedly working out with Browns receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. this offseason.

Also included in the Patriots filming punishment, according to reports, is that the team’s TV production crews will not be allowed to video any games this season, and team senior officials must receive training on league operation and game policies.

The Patriots, who admitted the mistake, will reportedly not challenge the ruling.
