FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung was indicted earlier this month by a Belknap County Superior Court grand jury in Laconia on cocaine possession charges, according to the Belknap County attorney’s office.

There is a report via Boston 98.5 FM radio that says the charges are stemming from police responding to an alarm being tripped at Chung’s Meredith home on June 25. The indictment took place on August 8 and Chung will be arraigned in Belknap Super Court in Laconia, according to the Laconia Daily Sun, this coming Wednesday.

Police, according to WHDH-TV in Boston, responded to the alarm and found cocaine on a table in Chung’s home. They seized the drug and had it processed and tested.

The Daily Sun quotes Meredith police chief Kevin Morrow saying that Chung was not arrested.

“There is no (mug shot) photo to provide,” Morrow told the paper.

The indictment reads that “Patrick C. Chung did possess or have under his control a quantity of the controlled substance cocaine.” and that “Patrick C. Chung committed the above act knowingly.”

Chung, who broke his arm in last year’s Super Bowl, did not play in Thursday’s preseason game at Gillette Stadium as he did not practice Tuesday. He has participated in practices during training camp – often with a red non-contact jersey — but like several starters, has not played in the preseason going into Thursday night’s game vs. Carolina.

“We are aware of the reports regarding Patrick Chung,” the Patriots said in a statement released around noon. “We will not be commenting while his judicial proceedings take place.”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick wouldn’t elaborate on why Chung didn’t play. “Pat hasn’t played the whole preseason,” Belichick said. When asked about his reaction to the Chung news, the Patriots coach said, “Yeah, I think we released a statement on that.”

Chung is an 11-year NFL veteran who played with the Patriots first from 2009-2012 and re-signed with the team in 2014 after playing the 2013 season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Chung, who has played on three Patriot Super Bowl championship teams, signed a one-year extension in April and has long been one of coach Bill Belichick’s favorite players. He has started 110 of 140 career games, with 708 tackles and 11 career interceptions.

It sounds as though in the Patriots locker room that Chung has the support of his teammates.

“Obviously, Pat is a great guy, a leader, a captain, a great father,” Patriots safety Duron Harmon said. “I can’t talk (enough) about all the great things about Pat. All I can say right now, obviously it’s an ongoing investigation, is that we’re rooting for Pat, we love pat, and we’re going to do everything we can to rally behind Pat and help him get through this.”

If convicted – reports say a trial may not take place until as late as next March – Chung could face discipline from the NFL, possibly a four-game suspension depending on the circumstances, according to the NFLPA collective bargaining agreement. The legal jail sentence itself is reportedly 3 ½ – 7 years. It’s not known whether this impacts his status for this upcoming season since the legal proceedings could extend into next spring.
