Merrimack Republican delegation making historic progress on PFAS

By State Reps. Melissa Blasek, Bill Boyd, Bob Healey, Mary Mayville, Maureen Mooney, Jeanine Notter and State Sen. Gary Daniels - Guest Columnists | Oct 15, 2022

Your Republican State Representative delegation and State Senator in Merrimack made historic progress in fixing the Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in Merrimack’s drinking water. This pressing issue left devastating effects on our environment and homes. The unacceptable damage done by Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics’ pollution risks the health, safety, and wellbeing of every Merrimack citizen, and must be corrected immediately. After two years of legislating, our delegation is proud to report that we made more progress than ever before in addressing PFAS for all of our friends, family, neighbors, and constituents.

This issue remains and continues to be a top priority for your Republican State Representatives and State Senator. These last two years, our delegation took great strides to fix the water issues affecting Merrimack. This progress includes leading the charge to pass several pieces of legislation that directly address the issue of PFAS in the Merrimack area. Thanks to Representative Healey’s efforts negotiating with the State Senate, Merrimack will be eligible to receive more grants and federal money to help remove PFAS from our water supply.

Furthermore, Reps. Mooney and Healey cosponsored HB236, which increased the statute of limitations for damages caused by PFAS, paving the way for Saint-Gobain to be held accountable for their actions. Merrimack Republican State Representatives Mooney, Notter, Healey and Mayville sponsored legislation with Senator Gary Daniels to require Saint Gobain to pay to fix the well water which they contaminated. Representative Boyd’s legislation now enables the commissioner of environmental services to make rules on airborne PFAS and further protect our ground and soil from being contaminated by PFAS. Representative Mooney also sponsored a bill which will help provide a $5000 rebate for citizens to install water filtration systems and $10,000 to connect their homes to public water.

Our Representatives and State Senator have always taken this issue seriously. That is why Governor Chris Sununu appointed Representative Boyd to the New Hampshire Drinking Water and Ground Water Advisory Commission where he was recently elected chair. Representative Boyd also worked with the late, great Speaker and Merrimack Representative Dick Hinch to deliver $2.5 million to fix and improve the water tank on Turkey Hill Road, $15 million in grants and low-interest loans for the filtration system in wells 4 and 5, and $5.5 million for the Pennichuck Pump in the Merrimack River. This investment benefits all of the water users in the area, not just Merrimack alone.

For the Merrimack Republican Delegation, this issue is personal. We are going to continue to fight Saint Gobain and hold them accountable for polluting Merrimack’s water supply. All of this money is being spent to clean up their mess, but they have yet to admit any culpability for it. As your State Representatives and State Senator, we promise to continue our work to clean the water and will support legislation to continue our PFAS vigilance. We hope that the citizens of Merrimack will continue to support us in this fight to hold Saint Gobain accountable and compliant as we move forward.

Actions speak louder than words and Merrimack’s Republican Representatives and State Senator are deeply committed to you. We remain focused on the issues impacting Merrimack and are working together to deliver real results. We respectfully ask for your trust and support once again on Nov. 8 to continue serving the town we love.
