It’s not local control, it’s loaded control

By Tom Lanzara - Nashua Resident and State Representative | Oct 31, 2021

Hello Fellow Nashuans, over the last few months, Nashua residents may have seen Vote No or Vote Yes on Question 2 signs popping up around our great city. Many may have heard the coined phrase “local control” or “more transparency” being pushed by the Nashua City Administration. This is in reference to our great Nashua Police Commission and some of our current elected officials pushing to increase the commissioners from 3 to 5 and to give that control to our mayor and the board of alderman, effectively removing the appointments from their current effective process. Having more positions will disperse the responsibility by diluting the accountability.

This is a buyer beware situation.

Keeping politics out of policing is fundamental for the great men and women who suit up each day, putting themselves in harm’s way to protect WE the citizens.

This is a political agenda that seeks to undermine the integrity and professionalism that we in Nashua have come to respect of our Nashua Police & Our Commissioners. The need to preserve the investigative capabilities independent from our mayor and alderman is crucial, we cannot allow corruption, fraud, criminal activities, or improprieties to go unchecked for fear of retaliation or counteraction. Let’s call this what it is, our mayor making a power play for his own partisan agenda. For years alderman have been allowed to hold dual roles as both Nashua Alderman and State Representatives, why? Because dual roles allow for conflict of interest in the political realm. Which is what our mayor is seeking to take advantage of here, with Ballot Question 2. By packing the police commission with his appointments of choice which based on his years of city & state candidate endorsement choices, would satisfy his rather than fellow Nashuans’ shared, goals.

We need balance & stability in Nashua, not a rush to change a long-standing system and effective well established and independent body of oversight that has a tangibly untarnished reputation and record.

Voting No on Ballot Question 2 on November 2nd, 2021, will ensure the stability remains with our great commissioners and the remarkable Nashua PD. Our Police Commission remains able and more than capable of managing its charter, the policies are maintained, and new policies are created if and when needed. What I think the majority of my fellow Nashuan’s feel that needs actual “fixing” is the overreach of City Hall. With the events of the past few years, the light switch has been flipped, the Nashua residents would much rather have our City Administration focus on lowering our taxpayer expenses, help hard working families keep more money in the households, fix & maintain our roads and maybe pick up the phone or answer an email when we need to reach out.

The Mayor and City officials who support this rushed change need to take another look and really listen to the overwhelming amount of citizen outreach for them to Stop, to vet this fully and to listen to our current police chief and officers who are requesting you to do so.

This very selective political agenda which has been screaming over the want and good of the people has to stop and it stops with your Vote No on Ballot Question 2 on November 2nd 2021.
