Pet peeves across the USA

What do New Hampshire and Hawaii have in common? I know your first guess is weather but I’m sorry to say you would be wrong. The correct response is the residents of the granite state and the pineapple state dislike public displays of affection. A new survey just out, studied what gets on the nerves of people from each of the 50 states.

So, if you live in Nashua, North Conway or Claremont, keep your hands to yourself if you are out in public. Just sayin. I’m not judging but apparently someone else is.

Fifteen states say that slow Internet is their biggest pet peeve, including Maine, Vermont and California residents. Burping is most frowned upon in Massachusetts and Rhode Island while badly behaving children bugs people most in Texas, Michigan and a few other states. The oddest #1 pet peeve comes from the good folks of Wyoming, where they despise passive aggressive behavior. But enough about the states. Here are my pet peeves…

• When Alexa, the artificial intelligence babe who lives inside my smart speakers, out of nowhere, suggests items we might be interested in, based on Barb’s Amazon purchase history. Just as annoying: Why do we have four of these intrusive devices scattered about the house? Lady Baba is personally responsible for a good billion of the Jeff Bezos fortune.

• I’m annoyed that, since leaving morning radio, where I got up at 3:30 every day, I’m lucky if I can sleep past 6 A.M.

• I hate thinking of new passwords. It may be the most annoying part of having a computer. What’s wrong with 123456? There, now you have my password. Go ahead and empty my bank account but don’t sue me if someone beats you to it. My old password was 111111. Alexa busted me about that, so I changed it.

• Another peeve: Butt dialing random people. One morning as I was leaving for Frank FM at 4:30, I accidentally called WMUR meteorologist Josh Judge on his mobile phone. Luckily he’s a deep sleeper and never knew.

• As much as I know clear plastic barriers are needed for safety during the pandemic, I can never hear what the person at the store is saying to me. So, I move over to an open spot and ask them to repeat it into my ear. Kind of defeats the purpose of the shield. Along those lines, don’t you just hate when the elastic breaks the first time you put on a new face mask?

• I’m peeved at those Liberty Mutual commercials starring LiMu the emu and his goofy buddy Doug. You may just see “Doug,” the actor, whose real name is David Hoffman, tooling around sometime, as he lives in nearby Stowe, Vermont. I’m not sure if he’s married or has a gangly bird as a roommate. Ewww emu.

• Finally I’m peeved to be cheering for Tom Brady in the big game, wearing new team colors. Makes me want to ask Bill Bellichick what HIS pet peeve might be.
