Nashua’s 54-14 win over Laconia in 1955 was one for the record books

NOV. 7, 1955 – “Rain failed to put a damper on Nashua High’s powerful attack, and it exploded with eight touchdowns and a safety to humiliate the Laconia Sachems 53-14 Saturday afternoon at the Lake City. Less than 100 persons, including a group of Nashua fans, braved the rain and cold to watch the contest.

“… End Robert Green insisted he should receive half of the credit for Nashua’s second touchdown. He said jokingly, ‘I tackled the quarterback, caused him to fumble, and Johnny (Narkunas) recovered in the end zone for the TD. We agreed that we would get three points apiece.’

“… The Nashua reserves all saw considerable action, most of them playing in a varsity game for the first time. Backs Leonard Boyer and Paul Sylvester, playing on offense for the first time this year, turned in brilliant running

performances.”

NOV. 8, 1955 – “Nashua Junior High’s undefeated football eleven ran its string of victories to six yesterday afternoon by outscoring the Bishop Bradley freshmen 20-12, with fullback Dick Denis playing the starring role and account for all three touchdowns.

“It was a great team performance sparked by the spectacular running of Denis and the clever ball handling by quarterback Jerry Levesque. Showing strength at the ends were Phil Dumais and Al Briggs, while Chris Matakos and Denis were outstanding on defense.”

NOV. 9, 1990 – “In Thursday night’s Class boys soccer semifinals at Holman Stadium, third-ranked Bishop Guertin played like the machine coach George Gauthier envisioned, completely dominating second-ranked Milford to win 3-1 and advance into Sunday’s 4 p.m. final against unbeaten Londonderry.

“… A direct kick just 3 minutes, 35 seconds into the second half by John Gervais was fumbled away and BG fullback Keith Audette was there to slam it home for his first goal of the season in what proved to be the game-winner.”

NOV. 10, 1970 – In the Paul Newman movie “Slapshot,” this might be referred to as old-time hockey:

“At an emergency meeting of the New England Hockey League last night in Tewksbury (Mass.), league Commissioner Bill Riley suspended Concord Eastern Olympics coach Pat Egan for striking Nashua Maple Leafs player Eddie Sullivan during a regularly scheduled game in Concord on Oct. 31.

“… In other business, Riley also suspended the Maple Leafs’ Gilles Trepanier for the next three scheduled league games for misconduct during the same game in Concord. … Frank Gingras of the Leafs was suspended for the next two league games for swinging his stick at an official during last Friday night’s game at the Nashua Garden.”

NOV. 11, 1980 – To a dearly departed golf course:

“If you’re a golfer and you’re tired of traipsing up and down hills, walking all over creation just to play 18 holes, Jake Young is the man for you. The 57-year-old golfing enthusiast from Amherst has designed and will open a nine-hole course in Amherst, especially for the finesse golfer who disdains the tough hills and the long holes.

“… The course, named Buckmeadow, no doubt after the countless deer tracks Young kept pointing out throughout the nine holes, will officially open next spring.”

NOV. 12, 1975 – “The Merrimack Cardinals rolled to a 32-0 win over the Milford Spartans in Pop Warner action to assure an Eastern Division championship for the Cardinals.

“Touchdowns were scored by Mike Hannan on a 46-yard pass from Scott Peloquin, Bill Desroche on a 27-yard run, Peloquin on a quarterback sneak after a fumble recovery by Scott Derderian and Derderian returning a punt 62 yards.”

NOV. 13, 1945 – “With Eddie Dobrowolski featuring the running attack while he was in the game, and little George Gamache doing so when Ed was on the bench, Nashua’s Royal Purple eleven exploded all over previously unbeaten, untied and unscored upon Spaulding High of Barre, Vt., to completely subdue the best Vermont eleven of the year by a 32-6 margin before 5,500 fans, the smallest assemblage of the year, at Holman Stadium.”
