Why we are Proud to cast our vote for Vice President Joe Biden

By Maura Sullivan, Luz Bay of Dover and Mindi Messmer - Guest Columnists | Aug 21, 2020

This year’s Democratic National Convention will be historic for the nation and for our state of New Hampshire. The convention will be virtual, allowing more Americans to participate than ever before. We have a woman of color as the vice presidential nominee. And, for the first time since 1968, all of New Hampshire’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention were elected to represent someone other than the presumptive nominee. In fact, New Hampshire is the only state to send delegates to the 2020 convention that were only elected to represent candidates other than former Vice President Joe Biden. That said, Vice President Biden has our full and enthusiastic support.

As delegates from the Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, and Amy Klobuchar presidential campaigns, we were each chosen during the First in the Nation Primary to represent the values of our primary candidate at the Democratic National Convention. We stood behind these candidates because of how we believed they would tackle the most pressing issues that matter to us. We may not agree on the details of how to tackle those issues whether it’s affordable health care or ensuring parents can stay home with their newborn or sick loved one, but we all agree that what unites us is so much greater than what divides us. Now we have all come together to unite behind our nominee who we believe can defeat Donald Trump, fight for the issues that matter to us, and lead us out of this challenging period in our country’s history.

Like Bernie Sanders, Vice President Biden is committed to supporting policies that support workers and working families. He supports a $15 minimum wage, increasing the compensation and benefits for those in health care, child care, and elder care, and investing in a clean energy economy to eliminate carbon emissions from factories by 2035. Unlike our current president, Senator Bernie Sanders and Vice President Joe Biden listen to the scientists who know how to address the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change crisis and think that we must act using evidence and facts to guide decision-making.

Like former Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Vice President Biden is dedicated to supporting our service members, military families, and veterans. He will ensure that our military is forward-leaning and positioned for the 21st century threats that our nation faces — including cybersecurity attacks, climate catastophies, and bio-terrorism. Furthermore, as a military father himself to his son Beau, he will ensure that our troops and their families have the training, equipment, and support that they need. He will restore a national culture of inclusion and belonging by reversing Trump’s transgender military ban, by working with Congress to eliminate co-pays for preventive health care for veterans, and by improving health services for women servicemembers and veterans.

Like Amy Klobuchar, Joe Biden will support our teachers and students. Vice President Biden will give our educators the pay and dignity they deserve, help teachers and other educators pay off their student loans by improving the existing Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and make two years of community college or technical school free.

The work we did in the New Hampshire’s First In the Nation Primary allowed us to build a network of grassroots activists who care deeply about these issues. From the moment we became delegates to now, we have been working to build excitement with voters across our state. That is why we are thrilled to represent our great state of New Hampshire at this year’s Democratic National Convention and support Democrats up and down the ticket.

A vote for the Biden-Harris ticket is a vote for character, integrity, and a restoration of the values of our country. It’s a vote to reject the politics of fear, racism, and misogyny that we’ve seen from the Republican Party and the Trump administration. We know this election will define the future of our nation for generations to come – so let us choose to be defined by what unites us, not by what divides us, by love and not hate, by hope and not fear. A vote for Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris is a vote to restore the soul of our nation and begin to fulfill the promise of America.
