Volunteer opportunities in Nashua

By SARA CAESAR - | Feb 9, 2020

Southern New Hampshire is fortunate to have such a wealth of people who want to pitch in and lend a hand. We also have a huge number of nonprofits in the area who need help. The web portal, Volunteer Greater Nashua, comes in as a connector between those who want to help and the agencies who are looking for people who want to take an active role in making a difference for our community. Volunteer Greater Nashua, co-sponsored by The Telegraph and United Way of Greater Nashua, is a great place for people in search of an organization to collaborate with in working toward positive change in our community. Volunteer opportunities can be found by searching by zip code, interest area, and more. We’ve included several new listings featured on the site in this article. You can always find more on Volunteer Greater Nashua at http://www.volunteeergreaternashua.org.

Home Health

& Hospice Care

Home Health & Hospice Care (HHHC) has been a provider of home care and hospice services since 1883, making them the region’s most experienced Visiting Nurse Association. They are a nonprofit serving 25 communities in the greater Nashua and Manchester area. Their Hospice team cares for patients in their homes, in nursing facilities, and in their 10-bed Community Hospice House. HHHC volunteers visit and provide support to patients and their families in all of those settings. Home Health & Hospice Care serves people from all cultural backgrounds, and it is important that their volunteer pool reflects the population they serve.

Home Health and Hospice Care is actively seeking Spanish, French or Greek speaking candidates, and welcomes volunteers who speak any language, to help us better serve hospice patients and their loved ones. It is important for them to have a diverse group of volunteers to support the diverse populations they serve. Their Spring 2020 volunteer training course runs February 26 through May 6, every Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. to noon. The class takes place in the Merrimack office. HHHC volunteers work closely with the nurses, social workers, and chaplains as part of an interdisciplinary team. They offer companion, pet and music services to their patients as well as transportation, respite, vigil, and adult bereavement support.

Friends of the Nashua Public Library

The Friends of the Nashua Public Library advocate and raise funds in support of the Nashua Public Library. They are readers who want to foster the passion for reading and learning in others. They hold an annual book sale in the spring, and often need volunteers then to help prepare by sorting new inventory into their collection, sorting books into subcategories, and setting up to look like a bookstore. In addition, a small committee selects the Nashua Reads book each year and then hosts an author visit each Fall. They need volunteers on an occasional basis who like to read and are familiar with authors and genres of books.

The Friends of the Nashua Public Library’s book sale is coming up on March 20-22. They are looking for volunteers to help prepare for the book sale by sorting in books, setting up displays, pricing items, working at the sale, or other tasks.

For more information, visit www.volunteergreaternashua.org and search for “Friends of the Nashua Public Library.”

Nashua Community Music School

Nashua Community Music School is a 35-year old nonprofit located in the Nashua Millyard. Their mission is to provide Southern New Hampshire and beyond with a broad spectrum of learning, performing and listening opportunities in music with the finest teachers available. NCMS offers music education opportunities for all ages including: private music lessons, group classes, ensembles, Music Therapy, Music Outreach Programs, and summer camps. They hold events and activities at their facility and out in the community throughout the year.

They are looking for volunteers to be available on an on-call basis who would be willing to help at a variety of events such as recitals, community activities like a drum circle or Recycled Percussion obstacle course, and their yearly fundraiser. Musical skills are not required but always a plus. They are also specifically looking for volunteers to help with the set up and tear down of their annual fundraiser: Play it Forward on April 18.

New Hampshire

Children’s Behavioral Health Collaborative

The collaborative is a multi-disciplinary initiative fixing barriers and improving behavioral health outcomes for children, youth and their families in New Hampshire. The collaborative represents the largest collaboration of New Hampshire child and family organizations and more than 50 agencies focused on mental health and substance use disorders for children, youth and families. The goal of the Collaborative was to develop and implement a plan that would transform the current delivery system.

In March 2013, the Collaborative released the New Hampshire Children’s Behavioral Health Plan. They believe that efforts to improve care must be done together, across the public and private sectors and that the future prosperity of New Hampshire depends on our ability to foster the health and well-being of the next generation of citizens.

The New Hampshire Children’s Behavioral Health wing of New Futures is looking for advocates to share their stories and help advocate for changes to the System of Care for children.

For more information, visit www.volunteergreaternashua.org and search for “New Hampshire’s Children’s Behavioral Health.”

Save the Date – United Way of Greater Nashua will be hosting a Volunteer Fair at the Nashua Senior Activity Center from 5:30-6:30 p.m. March 11. Many nonprofits from around the region will be on hand to talk about how you can pitch in.
