Reject extreme Republicanism

By Rep. Peter Somssich - Portsmouth | Aug 20, 2022

Soon voters in New Hampshire will be asked to decide on candidates in primaries and in the November general election. Since the Republican Party has now embraced the extremism of the Free State wing of their party, they actually no longer have a real party platform. It is time for voters to be patriots and defend our constitution. In my opinion, this means voting for Democratic candidates for Federal, State and Local offices.

Some Republican candidates tell us that the Supreme Court decision on abortion is “returning that issue to the people”. However, I guess they do not believe that women are people, because that decision allows states to decide, instead of women. Others claim that President Biden is destroying our country. Have they forgotten the chaos, racism, hateful speech and incompetence of President Trump, who did not even believe that the Covid-virus was spreading in our country (and who is now responsible for at least 600,000 deaths). This is the same president who communicated by Twitter with an unsecure phone, held almost no press conferences, and has been lying about the results of the 2020 elections, and claims to be a genius.

As a state representative for the past 5 ½ years, I have seen reasonable Republicans join a movement to help destroy government services (e.g., defunding education in Croydon, and creating chaos at Gunstock), and be afraid to push back against bills such as seceding from the United States and restricting women’s rights to control their own reproductive choices. I have also seen Governor Sununu disagree with them, only to be overruled by the Republican lawmakers in Concord, whether on vaccinations, school decisions, renewable energy or gun violence safety. He wants to be on both sides of every issue.

Regardless of the candidate involved, please take the time to ask them some basic questions: Do you support Mr. Trump for President in 2024? Do you agree that the 2020 election was fair and legitimate? Would you support seceding from the US? Will you support and trust women to make their own decisions about reproductive issues? Do you support action to slow and reverse Climate Change? Will you support NATO and the US to defend Ukraine? Do you support efforts to strengthen our democracy? Answers to these questions should make it easy to decide how to vote in the primaries and the general election.
