Band-aid won’t pay for rate hikes

By Tess George - Nashua | Jul 9, 2022

Energy bills will be doubling for NH residents this August, thanks to the Gov. Chris Sununu appointed Public Utilities Commission. Both Eversource and Liberty Utilities received approval from the PUC for these outrageous price hikes.

Gov. Sununu could have avoided this and saved NH citizens thousands of dollars. Instead, while taking huge campaign contributions from energy companies like Eversource and Eastern Propane, he has vetoed bill after bill that would have expanded renewable energy infrastructure in the state. He has kept us dependent on unreliable energy sources. Since the war in Ukraine began, the price of fracked oil has doubled. Even so, Eversource had record profits in 2021, so it’s hard to see the need for these huge rate hikes.

Gov. Sununu is offering a paltry $100 per citizen September to December to help with the rate hikes his commission approved. That money won’t pay our bills and would have been much better spent on renewable energy and plans to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Remember Gov. Sununu’s vetoes while you’re paying your utility bills this Fall and Winter. Let’s vote for legislators who understand our energy needs and will act in our best interests. You can also find more information at 350NH.org.
