Sununu’s successful gig
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu did a great job last Saturday night April 2 covering himself in comedic glory at the Gridiron Club’s annual politician’s roast In Washington, D.C.. Appealing in his oftentimes-hilarious remarks to both sides of two very fractured aisles, Sununu found humor in comments that never would’ve passed muster in the nation’s capital if he hadn’t decided to refrain from taking on U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan in this November’s election. And former president Donald Trump’s ears had to be burning overtime, wherever he was at the time, while the feisty Sununu not-so-softly savaged him repeatedly from the stage, utilizing lots of blue language in the process.
“He’s (expletive) crazy!” Sununu said to begin the beatdown, adding “The press often will ask me if I think Donald Trump is crazy. And I’ll say it this way: I don’t think he’s so crazy that you could put him in a mental institution. But I think if he were in one, he ain’t getting out!”
Sununu delivered a couple other amusing Trump anecdotes, including him misidentifying a man as one of his fans while driving with the governor on a New Hampshire motorcade route despite his holding a “EXPLETIVE TRUMP!” sign along with his American flag. Sununu also gently skewered Jen Psaki’s intent to join MSNBC as a case that she’d better get her salary up front due to the station’s present low TV ratings, as well as a self-deprecating crack about how his only “Build A Wall” foreign policy experience was a tiny edifice he had erected near the Canadian border with several friendly signs plastered on it.
None of this probably endeared Sununu to many GOP pols in the audience, most of them deeply in thrall to their disastrous, deposed Mar-a-Lago “leader”. You actually wonder if any Republican even dared to chuckle during Sununu’s routine, fearing that a video of some sort might make its way to the always sensitive and egocentric ears of the candidate they’re hoping will be their standard-bearer in 2024. The governor’s decision to stay Granite State-local instead of doing a Senate run which if successful would only subject himself to the hateful anti-Biden agenda obstructionism currently being practiced by the Washington Republicans was a wise one on several levels. And it certainly availed him of the opportunity to do an impressive Chris Rock impersonation on Saturday night. Minus the slap heard around the world, thankfully.
