Start governing

By Sue Holstein - Bedford | Oct 9, 2021

Our country’s most important infrastructure is its human infrastructure. People make this country great. People are our most important resource.

Too many elected officials think only in terms of the physical infrastructure from previous centuries – water and sewer systems, roads and bridges. Too few embrace technologies such as hardened electrical grids, renewable energy, and broadband.

Yes, we need to repair and modernize our physical and technological infrastructure. But, most of all we need to invest in our human infrastructure. We need to invest big time in our people and that means investing in quality public education from preschool to college. Business and industry desperately need educated workers to move this nation forward and keep us a world leader.

My entire life, I’ve heard politicians moaning about how we can’t afford to increase the national debt; that doing so would mortgage our children’s future. Well, guess what? My children are grown now and not just their future, but their very present, is already mortgaged by our crumbling, antiquated infrastructure.

I’m tired of short-sighted politicians telling us we can’t afford it. They would have us believe only way to fund desperately needed infrastructure is by raising the national debt. That is pure hogwash; it’s just not true. Returning corporate taxes to pre-2017 levels would cover it. Reason dictates corporations should pay for the infrastructure improvements they stand to benefit from.

It’s time for politicians to stop worrying about getting re-elected, and start governing. It’s time for Congress to pass both infrastructure bills.
