Do the right thing

By Judi Lindsey - Candia | Sep 18, 2021

Perhaps I’m naive or too trusting, but I thought the NH DES’s mission was to protect the natural resources of NH for its people.

At Friday’s protest rally in Concord, I learned that DES was willing to permit and allow the Casella Waste company to create a landfill for garbage at the foot of the White Mountains.

I learned, too, that 49% of the garbage is from out-of-state! And that there is no need for this new site as we, the people of NH, already have the capacity to deal with our own garbage.

Casella says there is no danger of leaks, and yet it has been documented that all landfill liners eventually deteriorate over time. It is just a matter of time!

The toxic leachate from the landfill would be transported across our highways from north to south, creating a very real possibility of contamination in accidental spills. And its final destination, get this, would be to be dumped into the Merrimack River!

Now why would DES ever approve such a plan? It would totally destroy the pristine Forest Lake areas – a vital community and tourist destination. I have to ask – who is profiting from a landfill we don’t need in our northern woods?

If you feel violated by this breach of trust in your government’s faulty and dangerous oversight of our healthy, vibrant environment, please write now to DES, 26 Hazen Drive, Concord, NH 03302-0095, or call 603-271-3503. Tell them to do the right thing! Deny this permit for the Casella landfill in Dalton.

We can not let this happen on our watch. We are informed. We care. And we take action.
