Right-wing hypocrisy

By Joe O’Neill - Amherst | May 8, 2021

The hypocrisy of the right is mind-boggling and laughable, except it has terrible consequences for democratic principles like truth, fairness, justice and, very importantly, the rule of law. Take one example: Tucker Carlson, a Fox News commentator who swims in the deep end of a fact-free pool, is haranguing his followers about the fact that some school districts in this country are requiring COVID-19 vaccines for staff and eligible students of age.

“How terrible,” he rants!” “How can this be!?” Yet he fails to acknowledge that schools have required entering students to be vaccinated against most childhood diseases like polio, measles, mumps, etc. But, anti-vaxers are hell-bent on NOT requiring a COVID-19 shot. People die from this disease – what’s their problem? These right-wing anti-vaxers are the same folks who have no problem passing laws that regulate women’s reproductive rights. Where’s the logic?

Don’t get me started on the 100s of voter suppression laws that the right is pushing all across this country, including many in New Hampshire that will probably become law. Under the guise of “protect the vote” these laws are really all about making it much harder for select sub-populations (read people of color, college students, i.e., liberal voters) to vote. It’s all about the “Big Steal/the Big Lie” of the former guy’s election. Is this what the Republican Party has morphed into? I’m afraid it has. How can anyone with half a brain vote for these guys in the next election? This isn’t what we want our country to espouse. Keep Democracy alive – vote for logical candidates in the next election.
