For the love of their state parks

By Gary Ghioto - Lisbon | May 1, 2021

HB 177 passed in dramatic bi-partisan fashion in the New Hampshire House April 9 and is now headed to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee soon for a hearing.

It was heartening to see the overwhelming support for HB 177 by Nashua district lawmakers.

They voted to protect: Miller State Park, Mt. Monadnock State Park, Clough State Park, Greenfield State Park and Silver Lake State Park from new landfill encroachment.

Why did this bill, heavily opposed by Concord lobbyists for solid waste companies, find the support of both Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Nashua?

It’s because these lawmakers know there will be no more state parks established by the state anytime soon. They know working families depend on these natural treasures for recreation, family get togethers, solitude and appreciation of nature.

Memories of a lifetime are made at New Hampshire’s state parks.

Why not protect them FOREVER from the inevitable odors, noise and environmental degradation associated with new landfills built near their borders?

That is exactly what HB 177 does. It sets a 2-mile perimeter around our 68 state parks from new landfill development. It doesn’t cost a cent. It is a commonsense measure ensuring that this generation and the generations to come will have their special places to enjoy and make memories.
