Help save a symbol of Lyndeborough

By Jessie Salisbury - | Mar 20, 2021

The United Church of Lyndeborough has proposed the sale of the former Congregational Church in Lyndeborough Center, and we need you to make sure it remains a building we can all use. The Lyndeborough Historical Society is spearheading the campaign to secure funds so that this can become a town-owned building. Our goal is to raise $156,000 through this fund-raising effort, so we can make sure that this important building remains a vital part of the Lyndeborough community.

The church was built in 1837 and is the Historic District with the Town Hall and former Town Pound. It has stood as a symbol of Lyndeborough for almost two hundred years. We believe that it is essential to save this building for future generations in Lyndeborough, since it is such an important part of our town’s character.

Although we all would like this building to stay a church as it has in the past, we as a community need to accept the reality that this is not going to happen. We don’t want this important building to become private property and possibly be turned into a private home, gutted, or torn down. We want it to remain part of the community, to become a public building so that everyone can continue to use it and celebrate its history, its beauty, and its acoustics.

If you want to help preserve this important part of Lyndeborough’s identity, please help us raise the needed funds to purchase it for town use. We have recently kicked of the campaign for donations and have so far been able to raise over $10,000 from generous donors. If you see the value of old buildings, New England village churches, and picture-perfect small-town charm, please donate. Make your checks out to the Lyndeborough Historical Society Building Fund, and send to: Church Building Fund,  c/o Stephanie Roper   35 Brandy Brook Rd.  Lyndeborough, NH 03082.

The Historical Society is a registered nonprofit.
