We are failing to meet climate goals

By Megan Pardoe - Nashua | Dec 12, 2020

It has been five years since the Paris Climate Agreement was created and put forward climate goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and halt the rise of the overall temperature of the Earth. But as a collective, we have failed to meet these goals. The nations that have signed this agreement, this year alone, have used 120% fossil fuels that is allowed to meet the Paris goals.

The goal of the Paris Climate Agreement is to lower greenhouse gas emissions to ensure the Earth will stay below the two degree celsius mark of the temperature of the planet before pre-industrial levels allowed them to rise. But we have failed to meet this goal and nations are using more fossil fuels than before the agreement in 2015.

As for the United States, President Trump withdrew the country from the agreement in 2017 and has increased US usage of fossil fuels. Thus creating more greenhouse gas emissions and hurting the planet. But President-elect Biden has promised to reenter the US into the agreement.

But more needs to be done than just resigning the Paris Climate Agreement. America needs to take serious climate action and to clean up energy sources. The country also needs to transition the economy into a green sector.
