Get off your duff and vote

By Joe O’Neill - Amherst | Oct 17, 2020

The Nov. 3 presidential election is not a choice between Biden and Trump. It’s a choice between democracy (small ‘d’) or autocracy. The current occupant of the White House has no intention of ever leaving office.

He and his Republican enablers are doing everything in their power to suppress the vote, and are especially targeting those that are ‘casual voters’ at best. If you don’t mind living Russia-style, where rich mafia-type crooks control everything, citizens and journalists are locked up without cause, and opposition leaders are killed, then don’t vote. Or waste your vote on a 3rd party candidate as a protest. If you don’t vote or waste your vote, you are supporting Trump’s efforts towards an autocratic regime in this country. The choice is clear. A vote for Biden is a vote for democracy. Not voting, or voting for anyone else, is not a vote for a democratic future.

My message is simple: get off your duff and vote! If you haven’t bothered to vote before, or are turned off by where the country is heading, you need to vote on November 3. If you’re not registered, get registered now. If you want to vote absentee, get a ballot and return it now. Don’t rely on the mails. A NH Public Radio story reported that a recent US Post Office policy change has resulted in local town clerks seeing a delay in ballots getting to and from those who request them. Local post offices used to be able to internally hold on to absentee ballots heading to or from local addresses, but are now required to route them through regional processing centers, adding a day or so delay each way. Just another example of how autocratic wannabees operate! Ensure your ballot is received by November 3. Or, vote in person. Most towns have instituted safe voting procedures during this pandemic.
