‘Willful blindness’

By Connie Owen - Hudson | Oct 3, 2020

I am continually amazed at how consistently many Republican members of our Federal, state and local governments refuse to deal with the realities of the damage that Donald Trump has caused for the United States. At his inauguration he swore to protect and serve the Constitution. If you have any doubt about the damage internally and among the other civilized nations, replay the broadcast of the first Presidential debate.

Trump put on a forceful display of lying, bullying, and overbearing egomania. The following day he continued to rave about his “ratings” and deny his knowledge of the dangers stemming from the actions of white supremacy groups. When I reflect on the refusal of many Trump supporters, in and out of government, to deal honestly with these troubling situations, I think of statues of three monkeys who “See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil” or of Admiral Horatio Nelson who justified his actions by looking through his telescope with his “blind eye.”

I would hope and pray that those who are hiding behind “willful blindness” look clearly at the dangers to our constitutional government that await without clear and honest action to hold Trump responsible.
