Will black lives finally matter

By William F. Klessens - Salem | Sep 5, 2020

Our four American sports leagues covered themselves in socially-tinged glory yesterday, as the NBA suspended their playoff games, the NHL did the same with their post-season schedule, and many NFL pre-season practices were cancelled along with a number of regular-season baseball games.

And in a wonderful sidebar all this player action came with the total compliance of both individual team ownerships as well as the ruling governor/commissioner hierarchies of the four leagues.

We’ll all be inundated with a ton of “They should shut up and play” malarkey from all those disgruntled “put-upon” fans, many of whom couldn’t care less about the death-dealing racial nightmare roiling America, and indeed voted for the “leaders” who help propagate and instigate all the anti-African American hatred.

2012 should have been the year that the National Rifle Association had the chance of being toppled, or at least having common-sense gun laws enacted for the public safety. But despite the childhood carnage at Sandy Hook on that terrible day the GOP right wing and their acolytes circled their wagons successfully and, as usual, the public rage dissipated over time.

2020 is similarly a potential watershed year for White racism to be tempered if not defeated, a time for Black Lives to actually finally Matter. And nothing fans the flames of emotion with a huge segment of the United States population, especially during this pandemic year, as a stake being driven through the heart of our World-Class Athletic entertainment, that we’re all used to enjoying year-round. So let’s keep the heat up as the contentious next months go by and the air gets cooler, and put the REAL stake in on Nov. 3.
