Vote Sept. 8

By Loretta CR Hubley - A Nashua Artist | Aug 29, 2020

Watching the second day of the Republican Convention, I was surprised to hear a Nazi-style speech by Kim Guifoyle given in front of our flag portrayed in a 90 degree turn with stripes down, blown up over at least two of the walls. Although this angled use of the flag has been used, the context provoked analogy to the Nazi flag, whether unintentional or whether as a coded message. The contrast to the traditional image associated with “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “America the Beautiful,” that of a horizontal stars & stripes waving and rippling in the breeze over the sky, is significant. A waving stars & stripes represents a living, flexible country full of life and humanity. Turning the image of the flag and enlarging it against the wall provokes the image of the ancient swastika symbol as it was turned in position and used to represent Hitler’s perversion of what is good and true. I wonder if others agree or if I am being too sensitive.

Please remind all your readers that the state primary is Sept. 8. Nashua absentee (or COVID-19) ballots can be dropped off at City Hall at a supervised location outside on the grass to the left of the back door, not in the mailbox on the back door. Citizens dropping off a ballot for another will be asked to sign a legal document.
